I've been using Fraps 2.9.8 for a playthrough of Evil Twin: Cyprien's Chronicles I've been doing on YouTube and all of a sudden today it started dropping my FPS down to 10 and below no matter what I set the rate to. Since the PC version of this game was just a port it maxes out at 60FPS with a max resolution of 1024 x 768, but even still I've been recording at about 30FPS and playing at about 20. Now it goes down to like 8 and 9 even when I set the recording rate down to like 20.

I thought it might just be the game so then I ran Left 4 Dead which I get about 75-80 FPS on average and it did the same thing: I set the recording rate to 20FPS and it dropped my ingame rate all the way down to 8-9. Anyone know what's up?

Interesting. How's your PC load when you're recording? Check the mem usage ingame with the task manager.

That was the first thing I thought of, so to test that I shut off basically everything but my wireless network monitor and it still did it.

Well that's odd. Only thing I can think of in that case is drivers...

Yeah. I'd update the drivers just in-case. But it's pretty odd. If nothing is bogging down your system it shouldn't be recording funny... 1 sec gonna take a look into the options.

Hmm, might want to try reinstallation too. There just doesn't seem like too many things that could go wrong with that simple of a program. Bizarreness.

Hate to draw focus away from the original problem, but Fraps stopped recording my SNES emulator. I use Zsnes. I tried Snes9x and it worked all of once when I tested it, but now it won't record.

Edit: It works now? WTF?

Yeah it's extra bizarresauce and it just suck because it's the only program I've found that works with older games. I've tried stuff like GameCam and whatnot but Evil Twin is like 8 years old I think. I reinstalled twice and it still does it. This just makes absolutely no sense because it was working just last night.

I even uninstalled my 2.9.8 and installed 2.9.6 just to try another version and it's the same shit. So fucking frustrating.

You could try using system restore to restore your comp settings to yesturday. =)

Too much job :/

This blows majorly. Do you perhaps know of an alternative to fraps? I just got back into doing these Let's Plays and it would suck to put it on hold again.

Camtasia is a good substitute. Especially for older games.

Good deal man, thanks. :headbang:

On a sidenote: Is it not weird to anyone else that there's a high volume of AE'rs at almost 3AM? I mean I'm up because I dozed off around 8PM yesterday and can't sleep but this is just wacky to me.

edit: The Camtasia software seems good, but it makes my screen kind of flicker ingame and when the video plays back it's ridiculously choppy. Any other suggestions?

Yeah there's some settings you're gonna have to fool with to get it less choppy. I really don't know how either as I tend to use fraps myself...

Incidentally this whole issue with fraps may very well be resulting from your cpu dying. I'd give it a try when you get your system up to par.

The only other programs I can think of are:

CamStudio: Which is like a free version of camtasia, but it chugs a lot.
ZD Recorder: Seems pretty good.

I could never get CamStudio to record audio, so I ditched it.

Oh I know exactly what's happening it's recording your mic instead of your output. 1 sec, I gotta find the way i fixed this. It may have been as simple as updating the sound driver.

Edit: Do this.

Once stero mix is enabled it will record the sound. Your setup may look a little different. (I know mine does.) So I set it up like this:
