Juxtapose
Okay~ In the pursuit of knowledge(and the fact that I need this for my presentation), I am wondering why rap is so popular in today's culture? And please....T_T;; Don't go into a huge bash fest/protecting rap fit~ This is a serious question that I need answered that I need for my English class. Link to comment
margot
I think a lot of teenagers are attracted to glamour/romance of rap type lifestyle: sex, money, drugs, gangs, rising from being poor to rich and famous ect. Link to comment
Battle_Pope
it's also perfect for the kids who want to make a lot of noise while driving in their car, bass beats for rap songs are insane when played on a nice sound system. Link to comment
TeleportSandwich
Rap is just the newest form of black music. As such, it needs to be co-oped by the white man and turned into a hidiouse and moronic mutation of what it once was. Plus, suburban white youth are retarded Link to comment
Gundampilotspaz
Rap was created for one purpose. DELTRON. All that came before, and after, should be eliminated by the hand of God. Link to comment
Battle_Pope
well yeah, del's pretty damn sick (pretty crazy he's Ice Cube's cousin) Link to comment

darkon
Rap was created for a lot of reasons. The first and foremost being it is an amazing genre of music that like all genres has a relatively crappy mainstream. Link to comment
Anime Gee
Ah yes. The ever elusive reason as to why rap is so popular. Sit back everyone. Good old Anime Gee will present the history of rap music & stuff. It all started back in the late 70’s. Some even say that it had its roots as far back as the 60’s. Yes, but it doesn’t really matter. With this new culture that was experimenting with graffiti, break dancing, beats & rhyming, a whole new way & style of thinking & expression was formed. It was known as the hip-hop movement. Most of this was started on the east coast. New York & stuff. At first, it was very fascinating & quite groundbreaking. This was something totally new & very unique. Eventually, it became more & more known through the 80’s, although, mostly among the black & Latin people. A lot of it was still underground. Eventually, giant record labels & companies, realize that there is big money in the “rap” business. Before you know it, rappers are getting signed on to giant record labels & all of a sudden, rap starts appearing more & more on the airwaves. Big entertainment entities like MTV, BET, Soul Train, & many more begin to push this on to the audience. Radio stations begin to push this more & more. Eventually, even the common white folks begin to like this form of music. A lot of it has lost it’s ingenuity & has fallen by the wayside, but, this is what keeps pushing through the airwaves. Movies, magazines, & many others glorify the “rapper” lifestyle. Guns, sex, money, bling, & more are the things to do. Everyone has to appear to be aggressive & whatnot to get accepted into society. To be in, you have to be part of the “hip-hop” deal. This is the code of the “popular” society. Before you know it, rap music & stuff even makes it to children’s movies & teeny bopper movies. It’s in action movies & chick flicks & comedies. Before you know it, you can hear any type of rap tune at any party & no one gets offended. Well, at least most people don’t. What once didn’t fly in the early to late 80’s with conservative people now flies with the likes of Martha Stewart. A party hosted at Disneyland will be loaded with lots of rap music & stuff. It has become a part of mainstream society. This, my young friends, is the reason that rap music has become so popular throughout the years. This is the reason that rap music has become so acceptable in today’s society. This is what makes rap popular. Link to comment

Ceraziefish
As far as I know, the thing with the beats started in Peurto Rico and Jamaica and the Carribean. People would mix together different records and sometimes talk over them. After a while they started talking to the beat. Then a lot of people from those areas moved to New York and other points east. This is all hearsay from a class I took on hip hop once, though. Seriously, I agree with Darkon. There is a lot of good rap out there. There is a lot of shitty rap. Is this really so different from any other genre of music? Link to comment
Belial
In my experience there is quite a bit of good hip-hop out there, but unfortunently the mainstream (aka MTV) only latches on to the mindless dance rap that they play on their stations. The only thing that bugs me about the better hip-hop is that there are very few real instruments involved. An example of this good hip-hop I speak of. Here Link to comment
guy incognito
I'm more into the underground stuff. Though I listen to only a few artists. MF Doom being one of my favorites. Heres a sample, just ignore the first few seconds of advertisement. Deep Fried Frenz Link to comment

Belial
I don't know about the whole DangerDoom thing. Seems like they're just cashing in on Adult Swim's success, though I've heard the music is actaually pretty good. Link to comment

Baltar
Rap in the 60's was in fact an expression of art and protest. However mainstream rap appeals to the very obvious unintelligent. The same with most country/western music. I am not making a broad accusation of all rap or country is bad for that matter, just as there is bad rock and metal. However the mainstream of rap in particular has no lyrics and as Belial pointed out no real interments. I can make the beats on my PC to a rap song uses while taking a shit. There is nothing mainly is rap that makes it become appreciated as music, or a great work of art. Link to comment
Belial
Rap in the 60's... The whole rest of your argument is destroyed by the fact that you can't get your first fact right. Do a little research next time. Link to comment

Then fucking do it, besideds, Rap music isn't about the beats, the beat is just the base of it. The real talent and art comes from the lyrics and rhymes. Link to comment
Belial
Actually, Hip-hop has its origins in the 70's but didn't break into the mainstream for a decade. Link to comment
