xD no I just like his movies a lot and there are many to enjoy! I love French cinema. Godard is a master.

Only a few French films and directors that has kept my interest. Louis Malle being the the main one whose work I've followed with interest. The one French film that I do consider quite brilliant and a favorite is MElville's Le Samourai.

Link to comment

You didn't think "Jules et Jim" was brilliant~??

My taste in foreign films seem to run abit more with Japanese directors like Akira Kurosawa, Masaki Kobayashi, Kenji Mizoguchi, Takeshi Kitano and Takashi Miike. The few European directors that's really kept my interest are Sergio Leone, Ingmar Bergman and Dario Argento.

Cut out stuff I don't care about, such as Musicals and Sports movies. I also remembered I hate genres. Blame the sexism inherent in the system for lack of female actors; I couldn't think of any offhand.

Have you ever watched Francois Truffaut? It's what got me into French Cinema.

Also dumb but I've always avoided Japanese directors out of pretension because I hate those "wapanese" people who think everything Japanese is awesome and cling to akira kurosawa's teat.

I like "Wings of Desire", good job with Bergman. German films are good and all, "M" and Fritz Lang and everything.

That description could also be given to those who think French cinema is the end all and be all of film history. Really, I have a preference for the classic Japanese cinema for the type of stories they tell. Primarily medieval Japanese folklore. Kurosawa's teat I dare not cling to since I am not worthy, but I do consider his contributions to cinema and the craft of directing impressive enough to earn him the accolades for being one of the best film directors ever.

I know a few people who think German directors of the first half of the 20th century are the greatest ever. It's really about one's taste when it boils down to, but even those who usually don't see Japanese cinema as their cup of tea still give Akira Kurosawa his props. One doesn't have to enjoy a particular region's films (Japanese, French, German, Italian, etc...) to appreciate the quality in the work. Most French film do not particularly interest me, but I've got to respect and even admire the amount of creativity put into the making of such films.

My list isn't going to be as comprehensive, because I only watch really one genre of movies and that's horror.

Takashi Miike

David Cronenberg

George Romero

Dario Argento

Good man. Don't forget around late fall will be the release of Miike's contribution to the Masters of Horror Showtime series. You'll have to get the DVD though.

Heyy I wasn't saying anything bad about people who like Japanese films or anything just the people who are irrationally obsessed with Japan.

I really like Rushmore too! But it annoys me (not related to rushmore) when really horrible movies use good indie songs. Like American Pie did that.

I like both french and japanese films but I prefer the darkest of these. I'm not a Truffaut or Godard person but I really like Haute Tension (High Tension, as we americans know it) but I also dig Italian giallo and exploitation... You know, the brutal stuff.

Ahh, then ye be a fan of Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust, Pasolini's Salo and Mou Tun Fei's Men Behind the Sun.
