Anger over 'racist' school play

A seven-year-old black boy has been withdrawn from a school play by his mother after he was cast as a monkey.

Lorraine Rees took her son, Myles, out of the production of An Enchanted Island, accusing Ashley Down Infant School in Bristol of racism.

The school said the pupils chose the parts they wanted, but a meeting between Mrs Rees and head teacher Helen Heap has failed to resolve the row.

One quarter of the school's 170 pupils are from ethnic minority backgrounds.

In its last Ofsted inspection, the school was described as a "good school and fun to be in".

'Racist connotations'

Myles Rees was cast as a monkey, alongside one other black pupil and three white boys.

Ashley Down Infant School firmly refutes the allegations of racism

School statement

Mother-of-four Mrs Rees, 39, made an official complaint to the school, saying: "Everyone is aware of the racist connotations of asking a black pupil to play a monkey."

She and her husband took their complaint to local charity Support Against Racial Incidents (Sari).

Batook Pandya, director of Sari, said there was no suggestion of deliberate racism, but questioned the "sensitivity" of the casting.

Relaxed and open

On Friday afternoon Ms Heap met to discuss the claims with Mr Pandya, Mr and Mrs Rees and advisers from the city council.

Mr Pandya said Ms Heap and Myles's parents had shaken hands, and the meeting was relaxed and open.

But he said Mrs Rees still maintained Myles was forced to play the part of a monkey, whereas the school said he had chosen the role.

After the meeting, the school said in a statement that it "firmly refutes the allegations of racism".

"In our experience, most children aged six or seven would usually be unaware of racial implications when choosing to play animal parts in a school play."

But the school accepted that there were other points of view, adding: "We appreciate that a parent who has experienced racism in their life may have a very different understanding and perspective."

The play was due to be performed next month.

Charles "Chick" Lennon, 68, received the steel and plastic implant in 1996, about two years before Viagra went on the market. The Dura-II is designed to allow impotent men to position the penis upward for sex, then lower it.

But Lennon could not position his penis downward. He said he could no longer hug people, ride a bike, swim or wear bathing trunks because of the pain and embarrassment. He has become a recluse and is uncomfortable being around his grandchildren, his lawyer said.

In 2004, a jury awarded him $750,000. A judge called that excessive and reduced it to $400,000. On Friday, the Rhode Island Supreme Court affirmed that award in a ruling that turned on a procedural matter.

"I don't know any man who for any amount of money would want to trade and take my client's life," said Jules D'Alessandro, Lennon's attorney. "He's not a whole person."

A lawyer representing both Dura-II manufacturer Dacomed Corp. and the company's insurer declined to comment. Dacomed maintained that nothing was wrong with the implant.

The implant consists of a series of plastic plates strung together with steel surgical wire, almost like a roll of wrapped coins. Springs press against the plates, creating enough surface tension to simulate an erection, D'Alessandro said.

Lennon cannot get the implant removed because of health problems, including open-heart surgery, his lawyer said. Impotence drugs could not help Lennon even if he were able to have the device taken out, because tissue had be to removed for it to be implanted.

Dacomed was later acquired by a California company whose sales dropped when Viagra was introduced on the market. The company filed for bankruptcy the following year.

BREMERTON – The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office has placed a deputy on administrative leave after the deputy shot and wounded a man in a tree with his gun instead of a Taser, the Sheriff's Office said.

The deputy meant to fire the Taser and not his gun Thursday, but he grabbed the wrong weapon, sheriff's spokesman Scott Wilson told the Kitsap Sun. The deputy has been with the Sheriff's Office for five years.

Deputies carry both a Taser and a gun on their utility belts. The Taser used is similar in shape to the .40-caliber compact model gun the deputy carried, Wilson said. The Taser is a handheld weapon that delivers an electric shock via two stainless-steel barbs.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was wounded in the leg and airlifted to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center, where he was in satisfactory condition.

Deputies and Bremerton Fire and Rescue personnel were called to the site of a fig tree after an employee of a local business reported the man had climbed the tree and was acting strangely. The man had been in the tree and talking to himself when one employee arrived at work at 7:30 a.m.

Deputies and rescue personnel attempted to coax the man from the tree for almost two hours before he was shot. During that time, the man became increasingly hostile, witness David Blakeslee told the newspaper.

Deputies were unsure whether the man was intoxicated, on drugs or experiencing a psychotic episode. They wanted to get him down before he hurt himself or others, Wilson said.

One deputy attempted to discharge a Taser at the man, but when it did not work, he asked another deputy to fire a Taser. Instead of using the Taser, the deputy grabbed and fired the gun, Wilson said.

Blakeslee, an employee with nearby B&B Auto Repair, described the man's reaction to getting shot.

"He said, 'Ow that hurt. I'm coming down; I'm coming down,' " Blakeslee said.

The man climbed out of the tree on his own. The shooting is under investigation by State Patrol detectives, Wilson said.

A FATHER-of-five accused of mowing down a group of yobs after his tyres were slashed and car attacked with baseball bats was last night being held for attempted murder.

Neighbours said the man was so furious he got into a van, chased the four-strong gang of vandals down the road... and ploughed into them. A youth of 17 was left fighting for his life with serious head injuries after the incident. Two boys were only slightly hurt and one uninjured.

The incident was said to have happened after a gang of youths wearing balaclavas smashed his car window with baseball bats and slashed the tyres with a knife.

Police and paramedics rushed Shipton-on-Cherwell, Oxfordshire, at around 11pm on Friday after being alerted by a passer-by.

The most severely injured boy was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. He was yesterday said to be in a stable condition, after being taken off a life support machine. A family friend claimed the youth had bleeding on the brain and said "everyone is just praying he'll be OK."

The motorist was later arrested by police on suspicion of four counts of attempted murder and was being quizzed by detectives at an Oxfordshire police station.

A neighbour said: "Everyone is talking about it. Apparently these teenagers went around to his house with baseball bats and smashed his car window, then slashed his tyres three times. One of them was hit really hard and had really bad injuries.

"I know the man accused of runing them over and he's very nice, not the type you would expect to do this. He has five kids. No one has any idea why he was targeted. It's obvious that he has been deliberately picked out by these youths.

"This just isn't the sort of thing you expect in this village. It is a tiny place - there's no pub, no shops, nothing. Ours is a really nice street."

Thames Valley Police refused to comment on the incident but confirmed that three teenage pedestrians had been injured and that detectives were quizzing a 34 year-old man on four counts of suspicion of attempted murder.

A spokesman said: "There are active inquiries continuing and I cannot give further details at this stage.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened late last night.

MUM Kate Colquhoun, 39, of Cowgate, Newcastle, who met Tony Blair at No. 10 to tell of her family's yob hell, has gone on hunger strike claiming their plight is still being ignored. She said: "Enough is enough. My children are terrified. I refuse to spend another summer with my family as prisoners in our own home"

LV POLICE INVESTIGATION: Trooper kills fired miner

Man went on rampage in dump truck near Overton

A recently fired miner was shot and killed late Friday after he commandeered a 70-ton dump truck and went on a rampage at an open-pit silica mine outside Overton, destroying equipment, igniting fires and causing millions of dollars in damage, police said.

The man was shot and killed by a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper as he rammed the mining vehicle into firetrucks from the Overton and Logandale volunteer fire departments, police said.

"There were an awful lot of firemen in danger," said Sgt. Rocky Alby of the Metropolitan Police Department's homicide unit, which is investigating the shooting. "He certainly could have killed a lot of people with that thing."

Alby said the man was not armed when he was shot.

Police would not release the 33-year-old man's name Saturday, but friends and family identified him as Adam Cooper.

The former employee of J.R. Simplot went to the company's mine Friday night and hijacked a front-end loader and then the dump truck, police said. He drove around the property destroying equipment and setting fire to buildings, police said.

While driving the dump truck around the mining pit, which is a mile long and a quarter-mile wide, the man tipped over a 10,000-gallon diesel tanker, causing it to ignite, police said.

The fire caused about $2.5 million in damage to buildings and heavy equipment, said Bob Leinbach, spokesman for the Clark County Fire Department.

Ben File, the mine's superintendent, declined to comment. Officials at the company's headquarters in Boise, Idaho, could not be reached for comment Saturday.

Word of the rampage and shooting spread quickly in Overton, a small community about 60 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

Friends, relatives and former co-workers of the man said they believed he went on the rampage because he was distraught over his firing about a month ago.

"I think he was upset how things happened there at Simplot. He wanted them to pay in some way," said Rod Rorden, who had known the man more than 18 years. "He wanted them to have some kind of loss for his loss. He wanted to make it hard for them to keep making money."

Rorden added, however, that it was unlike his friend to be aggressive. "It wasn't something he would do," he said. "He would never hurt anyone."

Charlie Cooper, the fired miner's brother, said the man had suffered from mental health problems but was never violent.

"Our family is just trying to deal with it right now. It's just a shock to us," he said. "We're trying to understand what happened."

Pat Olson, who worked with the man at the mine, said authorities could have ended the incident without killing him. They could have shot out the dump truck's 6-foot-tall tires to stop the vehicle, Olson said.

"Shoot the tires and it won't go anywhere," Olson said.

Left at the scene Saturday were three smoldering vehicles, a mangled 100-yard conveyor belt and a destroyed mining building about the size of a small mobile home. The dump truck, which had what appeared to be two bullet holes in the driver's side door and window, remained at the mine pit.

Olson said his former co-worker was preparing to sue the company over his termination but hadn't talked about doing anything destructive at the mine.

"You would never think in a million years that he would do that," Olson said. "He's so nonviolent."

Others, however, said being fired was too much for a man already going through a divorce and struggling with mental health problems.

Police said the man attempted suicide after his firing.

Rorden said that after the man was fired, he joked about driving a front-end loader through buildings at the mine.

Rorden said he didn't think the man was serious about destroying equipment at the site. "We all say something like that when we're mad at someone," he said.

The Highway Patrol would not comment on the incident, because it is being investigated by Las Vegas police, Highway Patrol spokesman Kevin Honea said.

Las Vegas police have an agreement with the Highway Patrol to investigate any trooper-involved shootings, Alby said.

The trooper who shot and killed the man was placed on administrative leave, as required by Highway Patrol policy. The Highway Patrol will release the trooper's name 48 hours after the shooting.

I bet he'll go free, and I hope he does. The law needs to understand that measures must be taken to assure that your property and family are protected from worthless fucking pieces of shit like these yobs. The police don't always get there in time and it's hard to catch gang members like that. If he caught them and fealt threatened for his rights and safety and those of his family, then he should have every right to defend.

Limbaugh detained at Palm Beach airport

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Rush Limbaugh was detained for more than three hours Monday at Palm Beach International Airport after authorities said they found a bottle of Viagra in his possession without a prescription.

Customs officials found a prescription bottle labeled as Viagra in his luggage that didn't have Limbaugh's name on it, but that of two doctors, said

Paul Miller, spokesman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

A doctor had prescribed the drug, but it was "labeled as being issued to the physician rather than Mr. Limbaugh for privacy purposes," Roy Black, Limbaugh's attorney, said in a statement.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection examined the 55-year-old radio commentator's luggage after his private plane landed at the airport from the Dominican Republic, said Miller.

The matter was referred to the sheriff's office, whose investigators interviewed Limbaugh. According to Miller, Limbaugh said that the Viagra was for his use, and that he obtained it from his doctors.

Investigators confiscated the drugs, which treats erectile dysfunction, and Limbaugh was released without being charged.

The sheriff's office plans to file a report with the state attorney's office. Miller said it could be a second-degree misdemeanor violation.

Limbaugh reached a deal last month with prosecutors who had accused the conservative talk-show host of illegally deceiving multiple doctors to receive overlapping painkiller prescriptions. Under the deal, the charge, commonly referred to as "doctor shopping," would be dismissed after 18 months if he continues to submit to random drug tests and treatment for his acknowledged addiction to painkillers.

Fucking teenage cunts like those vandals (Chavs most definately) piss me off. Good that the guy is teaching them a lesson. I hope he gets off free, because I don't think he is a bad man.

That man is my hero.

Today's "Gangsta'" youth needs to realize that they're a small force in a big world. That father-of-5 you might plan on attacking could just run your ass over, like we saw here. Or that granny could pull out a .45 and end you.

The world is a dangerous and unpredictible place, and the best way to go is to not fuck with anybody.

Bush camp attacks newspaper 'treason'

From Tom Baldwin and Anna Stroman in Washington

GEORGE BUSH and Dick Cheney are calling The New York Times a disgrace. Republican congressmen say it is guilty of treason and demand the prosecution of the Editor, while a right-wing radio presenter suggests most of its readers must be “jihadists”.

They never need much encouragement to attack America’s most venerable title which is, at least in critics’ eyes, a beacon for anti-war sentiment.

But this time the anger is palpably stronger. The newspaper’s offence was to publish an article revealing that the US Administration had kept tabs on suspected terrorists by tapping into bank records which track global transactions.

“What we did was fully authorised under the law,” said President Bush. “And the disclosure of this is disgraceful. We’re at war with a bunch of people who want to hurt the United States of America, and for people to leak that programme, and for a newspaper to publish it, does great harm.”

Tony Snow, the White House press secretary, said that the measures had proved their worth by helping to catch the mastermind of the Bali bombing as well as possibly “tracking down some of those who have been responsible in planning the subway bombings and the bus bombings in London”.

Republicans in the House of Representatives prepared to table a motion yesterday condemning the newspaper.

Peter King, a Republican congressman from New York, demanded that the newspaper, which he said had an “arrogant, elitist, left-wing agenda”, be prosecuted for violating the 1917 Espionage Act. Rush Limbaugh, the right-wing shock-jock, said: “I think 80 per cent of their subscribers have to be jihadists. If you look at The New York Times . . . it’s clear that they’re trying to help the terrorists.”

Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker, said: “You would think that The New York Times, located on the same island where the World Trade Centre once existed, would have some residual memory of 9-11. My sense is that they hate George W. Bush so much that they would be prepared to cripple America in order to go after the President.”

The relish with which American conservatives pour vitriol on liberal papers is matched only by the pleasure which an often self-regarding media derives from talking about itself.

The New York Times yesterday ran an editorial entitled “Patriotism and the Press” which declared: “The free press has a central place in the Constitution because it can provide information the public needs to make things right again.”

The editorial likened today’s atmosphere to the McCarthy era when “a half-century ago the country endured a long, amorphous global vigilance against an enemy who was suspected of boring from within”.

It argued that the report had exposed “an alarming pattern” in which Mr Bush cited security imperatives to bypass checks and balances, adding that the fight against terrorism had to be coupled with a commitment to defend individual liberties.

The newspaper was criticised last year for endangering national security after disclosing how Mr Bush had, possibly illegally, authorised eavesdropping on thousands of telephone calls made by Americans.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Kiss, the rock group known for putting their brand on everything from action figures and bobble heads to lunchboxes, now is marketing French Kiss Vanilla, Demon Dark Roast and Rockuccino at the first Kiss Coffeehouse.

Bandmates Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, sans the trademark makeup, greeted a crowd of hundreds Tuesday to mark the opening of their coffeehouse in this beach town.

“You can live to rock, but you have to eat to live,” Stanley told the crowd.

Some fans drove from as far away as Colorado and Oregon. One came from Poland.

“I can’t believe I just met them,” said Adrian Czarnbey, who introduced the band at a news conference. “It’s just like seeing Jesus for me.”

Fans were in line as early as 8:30 a.m. for the grand-opening party nearly 12 hours later. The coffeehouse poured its first cup of Rockuccino on Saturday.

Stanley, 54, said Myrtle Beach was the best place to launch the enterprise.

“We’re bringing coffee to a whole ‘nother generation,” he said.

The two band members drove up in a stretch limousine, then shook hands with fans as they made their way to a news conference and receiving line.

Simmons, known for sticking out his tongue while performing, declined to do so on Tuesday. “I would,” the 56-year-old rocker said, “but I noticed the floor’s kinda dirty.”

Send a note to Truman Duncan

A North Texas railroad worker whose legs were severed when he was run over by a train Sunday morning managed to make a call that may have saved his life.

While workers at Gunderson Southwest Yard in Cleburne were coupling cars, 36-year-old Truman Duncan slipped beneath the wheels of the train cars.

However, somehow Duncan managed to dial 911 and talk to an operator.

"I just got run over by the rail cars," he said in the call. "I need 911, CareFlite. I think I'm cut in two. I need everyone to hurry up now."

The recorded call captured the surprise of the 911 operator:

Operator: "Tell me where you are."

Duncan: "I'm at Gunderson Southwest."

Operator: "Someone got run over by a railcar?"

Duncan: "Yes ma'm. I'm about to pass out."

Operator: "You got ran over?"

Duncan: "Yes."

Trapped beneath the wheels, Duncan stayed on the line detailing his location and describing his condition.

"I think I'm going into sh-sh-shock," he said while on the line.

Horrified colleagues soon found him and made their own frantic calls.

"I got a guy got run over by a car," one fellow worker said in a 911 call. "I need CareFlite. I need ambulances."

The calls confirmed what Duncan told the operator; he had been cut in half.

Cleburne firefighters said they couldn't believe the man they found was the one who had made the call.

"Absolutely amazing," a firefighter said.

Firefighters used airbags to lift the rail car, but they say it was Duncan's extraordinary calm courage that got them there in time.

Duncan remained in critical condition Wednesday night, but officials said they are optimistic that he will survive.
