Well, Robin Williams would have been too good for the role, and Ledger seems like he can act when he sets his mind to it, though usually in period pieces with odd accents, i.e. The Patriot, Casanova, Ned Kelly, A Knights Tale, The Four Feathers, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Brothers Grimm...

Well, one thing I thought about was that this guarantees that Joker can be darker and grittier since Ledger is able to pull that off on facial expressions alone if he so pleases.
