For those of you who are unaware, Gatorland is one of Florida's oldest theme park attractions. It was founded in 1949 by Owen Godwin, and, as you can probably guess, it features alligators as well as crocodiles, snakes, birds, and other forms of wildlife native to Florida in a man-made reservation.

This morning firefighters fought to save the park from a fierce blaze that consumed the popular gift shop entrance as well as approximately 20-25% of the park. The only thing left standing from the inferno is the famous alligator mouth-shaped entrance, although it has suffered from some flame and smoke damage. Some local news organizations are reporting that several crocodiles and snakes may have been killed during the fire, but this has not been confirmed. Due to the intensity of the fire and the unique construction of the theme park, the flames could only be fought by the responding firefighters from the safety of the parking lot and the highway connecting to Gatorland's entrance. Attacking the fire from inside would have endangered the firefighters since most of the park is composed of wooden boards suspended over the reptile reserve.

EDIT: Here are some pictures of the fire.
