I need help with my future. Will you heed my call?

Recommended Posts

Alright so I'm a little confused about my future right now. I pretty much need help deciding my future and I come to all of you to maybe shed some light.

Here's the deal. I want to be an Elementary teacher, at least it's what I've decided to do so far. Anyways, I was planning on getting my degree and moving somewhere to teach, besides Florida which sucks donkey balls while doing the robot.

The question is, or questions are! Should I stay in Florida and get my degree while working at my current job which I am currently enjoying. Should I move to either Canada or New Mexico and do the degree thing, or should I get my degree here, then move? Should I move to Canada or New Mexico? I'm sure they each have the good and the bad about em. And... Any other help or info or tips would be much appriciated.

Why Canada?

Why New Mexico?

Buenas preguntas.

Either one because I hear the people are really nice to each other and there seems to be alot less hostility. I live in Miami, hence why I want a calmer atmosphere. I just want tranquility.

Also they arn't so anti-pot in both of those places. =x <--- thats the stupid reason. ^ Thats the good.

Hmmmm.... It all comes down to a matter of economical sense. Can you afford to live in New Mexico? Can you afford to live in Canada? That's what it pretty much boils down to.

You know where you might actually enjoy living? You should check out San Luis Obispo in CA. That's where CalPoly SLO is located.

It's in a very quiet & friendly town, located in a valley, close to the famous 101 fwy & not too far from the beach. Ideal for people that want to get away from the unfriendly cities. (^_^ )

Dreamer's got the right point. Make sure you are up to it. I don't know how self-sufficient you are or what other resoures you would have to draw on.

A few basic but fairly big points

If you need a degree, you need to look at schools, and the schools you are looking at/can get into(/can get scholarship or aid money to?) will have an impact

Canada and NM are fairly large. Especially Canada. You might want narrow it down a bit. You know, just basic stuff like urban v rural.

Canadian weather and Florida weather are different. Lots different. NM will probably be a bit dry compared to Florida.

As for the special Canada isuue

FC, do you know how hard it was for Laura?

I'm not really sure how much of a transition it would be/what would make it harder to move Canada. Maybe if it was your first time living away from your parents, but in that case, moving anywhere is harder than people think.

I mean, it's harder to get a greencard (or whatever the Canadian equivalent is) than people think.

amy- I think it would be an insane shock. Going from one of the warmest places to one of the coldest. It is also easier to get my degree here.

margo- I've heard its difficult to move there, but not as bad as some other places. Also yeah, in-state tuition is great.

Gee- I think it is possible, especially with the help of my parents. I thought about Cali, seems like some areas there are real nice. They arn't too harsh on the pot either. The thing is, I did an that one test that bypasses SAT's at my college, which is a community college, which means if I want to do my 4 year at a college with dorms I would probably have to do an SAT or an equivilent, which I don't care to do which is why I'm in community college and not in an FIU or FSU.

Dreamer- I don't know how independant I am. I can handle being by myself/being away from my parents easily. Can I take care of myself as in go to school, work, and pay for all my things. That's harder.

Faulty- Hell yeah Canada is awesome.

Foldered- Yeah, I havn't moved from home yet. The bills would take my spending money on crap away.

Satan- I havn't really looked into it yet. It's kinda in the planning process. I just have it so good here, but I kinda want to live in a mellower atmosphere.

Well I appriciate everyones thoughts so far, they are really helping as far as making a rational choice.

New Mexico is kinda like a friend wants to move there, but she's waiting to see what happens with her husband before she moves, hence if she does move she wanted me to tag along. So I dunno...

Exactly. I'm really glad I waited till grad school to go to a college out of state, simply because with how things currently are I can borrow money from mom when I need it and vice versa.

Growing up it wasn't unusual for me to spend half the summer away from home so it wasn't a homesick thing I had to worry about, but being financially on your own is a b*tch.

Yeah, maybe I should wait. At least get my associates and transfer for my bachelorz.

Exactly. I can handle being away from people that I've lived 20 years with, but the money thing is what stops me.

Well to help you with possible choices of places to live, Nevada was the one that almost voted to legalize pot this last election. :hardgay:

When did Florida get anti-pot anyways? Or is that just the Miami area?

Nevada ey? Too bad it didnt go trough. :(

Oh man, Florida is bad. Like a cop will take you to jail if you're high, but not in possesion even.

I've never been to NM but I can safely say that Canada is awesome. In a couple of years I'm probably gonna make a choice of moving south (Portland or SF) or north (Vancouver BC) and it's gonna be hard.

Personally, I'd get the hell out of Florida if I were you. But I'm kind of heavily biased against Florida (never liked the place, I dunno why. And I've never been there, either. But don't try to tell me it's nice or that I should give it a chance, cuz it's not and I shouldn't).

From what little I've talked to you it seems like you'd make a pretty rad teacher.

Perhaps I can help with some information about New Mexico. (Although I went away to college in IL recently, I've essentially lived in Northern NM for 16 years).

What were you planning on doing there/where were you going? For an undergraduate degree in teaching, UNM (in Albuquerque) is pretty good, and relatively inexpensive. I think total costs (tuition, room, and board) for out of state students are about $7,000 a year. Apart from that, the schools in New Mexico are not particularly good. ENMU, SNMU, NMSU, and the other 4-letter acronym schools almost universally suck. I suppose the other decent exception is New Mexico Tech, but that's really only applicable if you're interested in science or technical teaching. If you give me some more info about specific plans, I can give you some local feedback. :)

I'm home alone all the time and I'm 12, so I have no worries about being independent.

To main poster: As said before, you have to be financially intact, or you can't do it.

Yeah, everyone keeps telling me how awesome it is. I'm just worried about my school situation. Like will I be able to transfer with my current transcripts or would I have to take a test. I don't know how it works.

Florida sucks ass, especially for a person that doesn't give a shit about partying at south beach, cause I live in Miami. Orlando is awesome tho... The northern part is racist. XD Silly Florida. Everyones just so fake here, but thats everywhere.

And thank you for the teacher comment. It's really nice to hear from another person. <3

Well NM was more if my friend moved and I would just tag along. I wasn't really planning or expecting to go to school there, but it was a possibility. I heard teaching in NM is mellow so it was a plus. Both Canada and NM have thier good and bad, it's just right now Canada is leading with certain things that could benefit me. But yeah, either place I would want a school that has elementary education. Thanks for the NM feedback, much appriciated. I'll let you know if anything comes to mind.

Fuck I was drunk.

No wonder it was so cool! XD
