Theories on the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Alright, as those of you who've finished the series doubtless know, there are many questions left about the true identity of Haruhi Suzumiya. It's suggested that she's a technological singularity, a timequake, or god. I've also heard some theories that Kyon is god, etc. So what do you think?

My theories are as follows-

In one of the last episodes, Koizumi brought up the Antropic principle, that is that the Universe only exists because humans have noted its existence. Yuki and Ryoko have the ability to alter the world around them by re-writing its data. A name such as the Data Integration Thought Entity suggests that said entity is merely a collection of all the data of the universe and the thoughts of people, and it can create beings capable of changing the environment.

So then... is it possible that, in the series, everyone has the ability to do what Haruhi does, that is, influence the current world or create new ones, assuming their desire to change the world/influence their surroundings is strong enough?

Interesting how a comedy can have so much deeper plot material to discuss.

wait, if SD's theories are anything like what this show's about I like this idea o.o

maybe I should watch it...

.....

BECAUSE IT'S ONLY THE MOST POPULAR ANIME IN YEARS?!

I never really payed much attention to this shows "philosophical" points. I just liked watching Haruhi doing random, awesome stuff like drop kicking the computer club president in the neck.

I don't think that the creators ment more than humor when they put all this in, but it is all real philosohy xD

The concepts are very cool though, it's like Evangelionisque without the seriousness.

I do not think the show sucks and I enjoyed it for what it was......a generic/mindless comedy romp.

Anybody who tries to point out the "deeper meaning" behind this show is either trolling the haters or they missed the point of this show entirely. If anything, a part of this show is a parody of those shows that throw in pointless bullshit to try and be "deep".

The only thing that is even worth discussing about this show is whether Haruhi or Kyon is god. I believe it is Kyon and that Haruhi is nothing more than a plot device. Now that is a nice discussion to have, but it doesn't make the show philosophical, intelligent, deep, etc. I mean, I could easily make up as much bullshit about Rozen Maiden as the topic creator made up about this show and call Rozen Maiden the deepest show EVAR!!!

So yeah, the topic creator is exactly the type of people that this show was poking fun at, they TOTALLY missed the point of the show, and they fail.

Besides, the show only became popular due to a random ending sequence dance, nothing "deep" about that.

And what was I discussing? Who god is. It's a valid question. Enjoy the show for what it gives you, no?

As it's based off of novels, that's obviously not the case, you fucking moron. It was never intended to be anime or any sort of parody of anime in the first place.

It is what it is- a show about a high school girl that has god-like powers, and the people in her club have to keep her entertained or she'll destroy the world out of boredom. A comedy interspersed with an interesting and bizarre plot. That's why it's so popular.

O RLY? So I take it you have spoken with the writer if the novels? That is awesome!!!

Either way, I'm glad you are here to tell me that novels ARE UNABLE to parody other forms of media like manga or anime. Thanks for that awesome information. I still say you took this show WAY too seriously and missed the entire point of it.

But, to stay on topic, Kyon is god because he is the narrator and thus controls what goes down in the show. It's nothing deeper than that.

As SD knows ('cause this topic was brought up in RT), I've also got a theory on it. I wrote this quite some time ago, though.

Warning: This contains spoilers. Obviously.

While watching episode 5, I noticed that Yuki said that Kyon and Haruhi "Hold all potential within their grasp". This is Yuki's fancy alien way of saying that, essentially, Kyon and Haruhi can control their surroundings (at least), which is a common portrayal of a "god".

Itsuki backs up half this claim, literally calling Haruhi "god" and that she can do with the world what she wants to. He does, if I'm not mistaken, tell Kyon that he's been "Chosen by Haruhi Suzumiya", and as we see through the series, Kyon's opinions (when Haruhi actually listens, lol) affect what Haruhi does.

We see this in episode 14, where not only does Kyon tell Haruhi that he loves the ponytail (and she shows up to school the next day with one), but you'll also notice that when she notices Kyon is afraid of the closed space that Haruhi created, she is disgruntled because she thought that he was bored with the real world, and that's why she did it.

So there. Kyon and Haruhi are god, but Kyon is less so. Or perhaps Kyon had absolute power, but when he created the world he became oblivious to this and created Haruhi, subconsciously, as a scapegoat and a heir to his powers, but still somebody who would make life interesting?

We also notice that Kyon notices that Haruhi will get mad if she sees him with another chick, which is Haruhi subconsciously doing two things:

Letting herself be affected by love (although she considers it a "temporary lapse in judgement)

Giving Kyon more control than anybody (except Yuki and Itsuki) else really knows. He is, after all, "Chosen by Haruhi".

And anyways, deeper meaning or not, it's still another way to kill time.

GPS: You know I don't care one way or the other about how popular it is. xP I never watched Eva either.

This is the show where the episodes are all out of order, right? Can somebody explain wtf is up with that?

I honestly don't know why the randomized it, but it does give some purpose to watching the random episodes in between, because in chronological order, you get the blunt of the series in the first 6 episodes. I'd say the order does nothing really but build suspense, which still isn't that great when you can knock out the anime in a mere 6 or 7 hours, which is easy to marathon.

The stories portrayed in the novels are out of chronological order as well, so I'm guessing the director (Haruhi) wanted to stick with that format in order to give a nod to the fans of the book series. Its all mentioned on the Haruhi wiki article if I'm not mistaken.

also, some translations of the chapters from the novels and drama CD's

Vampy: Yes, but this shouldn't make you want to watch it xD

AS for the out of order... it adds another layer of insanity to the whole mix.
