LeadingMan
So basically the entire article boils down to "we can't do it yet" in the final paragraph. Wow. That's almost as good as that report they did earlier about water being wet. Boy howdy were they right. *splish splash* Link to comment
Samurai Drifter
While the idea makes for great fiction, some scientists now say traveling to the past is impossible. A few things. 1) Of course some scientists say that. And they don't "now" say it, they've been saying it for years. 2) Less than 100 years ago, scientists thought the universe was filled with ether, and that it was impossible to travel more than 30 mph. Ceraziefish
Whether it's true or not, (which I won't get into because I don't know enough about physics) physicists have agreed that time travel to the past is impossible for some time. However, time travel to the future certainly is, through time dilation. Link to comment

If it was able to surpass the speed of light, time would move backwards. Link to comment

Samurai Drifter
Unfortunately, according to Einstein nothing can accelerate to light speed, because infinite energy would be required to do so, which would require infinite mass. Now we just need to figure a way of obtaining light speed without accelerating to it. I'm not kidding, either. Link to comment
Siendra
They've already proved that time travel to a future moment is possible. It's just impractical for anything other then wave lengths of light. Link to comment
J-Stop
Of course it's impossible. If it was possible, future me would have already traveled back in time to tell past me about GPS's plot to take over the world so that we could all stop him in time. Link to comment

If it was possible, future me would have already traveled back in time to tell past me about GPS's plot to take over the world so that we could all stop him in time. They came and visited me already. Its my duty to provoke GPS into cardiac arrest via one of our SD&D arguments, thus preventing his plans of future world domination to come to fruit. Link to comment
Gundampilotspaz
Yeah, as it approaches the speed of light, time begins to slow down. Time slowing down = time travel to the future. ....no that would be time speeding up Of course it's impossible. If it was possible, future me would have already traveled back in time to tell past me about GPS's plot to take over the world so that we could all stop him in time. I'll give you Europe if you go back in time and stop yourself from going back in time to stop me from taking over the world! Link to comment

Belial
....no that would be time speeding up Do you even understand physics? If you're in a craft traveling 99% the speed of light, and you travel for a year, many thousands of years will have passed outside of the craft and thus Time Travel to the future. You are truly stupid. Link to comment

You are truly stupid. That's not Time Travel... Time Travel implies an attempt to travel though the fourth dimension. There you aren't traveling though the fourth Dimension, but the Fourth Dimension is just being distorted by your actions. Time remains linear, just slowed down in a small pocket of the universe. Now you could come back and say "But traveling faster then the speed of light is still linear time." Which is true, but in that case you are moving though the fourth dimension. Either way the way you said it was stupid: " Time slowing down = time travel to the future" which is silly. That is like saying "If I walk slower, I'll get there faster" Link to comment

I didn't know what he meant until he explained it. Because I was concerned with what was happening inside the craft, he was concerned what was happening outside. I probably should have gotten it, but I just didn't think xD Link to comment
Ceraziefish
That's not Time Travel... Time Travel implies an attempt to travel though the fourth dimension. But we're already travelling through the 4th dimension all the time! Yeah, but travelling 99% of the speed of light is an acceptable way of time travelling into the future. Since you're going so fast, time dilates, and if you get in a spaceship, fly away from earth really fast, then come back equally fast, thousands of years will have passed. Even if it's not "Magic box zaps me to the future" it's still time travelling. Anyway, I'm pretty sure if time travel were ever invented, GPS would have already used it to go back in time and take over the world before he was born, so that he would be born a warrior prince. No, his statement makes perfect sense in context. As long as the context is physics. Which it was. When time slows down for some people, other people "speed up" to them. Therefore, when time slows down for you, but not other people, it is akin to time travel from the future. Belial could have been more specific, but seriously, it's a really commonly accepted theory. I immediately knew what he was talking about, and I almost failed high school physics. And while I'm defending Belial, you oughtta go easy on the personal attacks, buddy. It doesn't help anyone. Belial
Its called the Theory of Relativity for a reason. Because time is relative to the observer. If I was traveling 99.999999999999999999% the speed of light an instant could pass for me while several thousand years could pass for the rest of the universe. Tell me that that isn't time travel.
