Broadband Help

If all goes well, by Friday, my computer will be connected to the internet by BROADBAND. I know. It's amazing.

Now I already have the obvious things lined up for what I finally break 3kb/s: faster gaming, more music/game downloading, leaving the computer on 24/7, but I have a question. D:D:D:

WHAT DO YOU GUYS DO WITH ALL THAT SPEED?

Because like, getting even 20kb/s seems stupidly high (I got excited once because my downloads were going at 10kb/s. For about a minute. It was still awesome) and I have no idea to do with it all.

p.s. don't move me to computer section

well webpages load pretty much instantly, and for like the first two weeks you'll be a little schoolgirl about how awesome it is.

it will lose it's luster, but it sure as hell beats dial-up. think: foruming, chatting, downloading, and whatever else you do, sans the slow ass ness of dail up, and you have broadband.

by the way, it's about time.

oh, and you can like, download anime torrents (i've been downloading Mai HiME for the past two days =D)

Welcome to the internet! (^o^ ) <3

Dude! If they hook you up with a static IP, you can run an FTP site from your box & a website from your box too! Chances are that you're going to end up with some form of dynamic IP though, but yeah. It's like 100 gazillion times better than dial-up. Hahaha! ( ^o^) <3

Downloading. Period. I remember when I had dial-up and had to choose between using the internet or downloading stuff on Napster. If I tried both, it'd be so damn slow. Now I've got eMule on all day without slowing me down.

I'm still suprised at how quick DSL can be sometimes. I was dowloading Beast of Burden by the Stones earlier at something crazy like 1.7Mb/s. It was done in an instant.

Yes, but see...

Cable = Expensive.

DSL = Less Expensive.

56k = Free.

Being that I really don't take advantage of the internet that much, it really puts that whole cable thing in doubt. The only reason I have DSL is because I also have broadband phone, and I'm getting the whole thing for, like, $40 a month. As opposed to something ridiculous for Cable. I mean, Comcast doesn't even put the real prices on their website. They just say "LOOK HERE IT'S ONLY $30 FOR THE FIRST FEW MONTHS!!!!!" What is it after that? $50? $80? Too much, in my opinion.

Of course, when I go to college I'm gonna get cable for free, so it's a moot point.

DSL is okay for downloading music and such. But, maybe I just have shitty DSL, because web pages don't load much faster.

Although that could also be because my dial-up was fast?

Anyway, it's better, but I did not experience the amazing change that people in this thread were talking about.

Clear your cache and see if there's a difference.

dsl sucks, get cable or T1/3

we have T1 here =]

T1's suck ass. They're 1.5/1.5Mbps. My CABLE ISP is in the process of upgrading everyone to 15/2 (faster than a T1).

A T3 is about 45Mbps. This still isn't anything crazy. OC-3 (155Mbps) and up is where it's at. However, they cost thousands per month.

I currently (on 10/1) pull about 1.15MB/sec on downloads from good servers. That's over 1000KB/sec!

I clear the cache habitually every time I'm done with the internet.

According to my ISP (I just checked) I'm paying for 1.5 mbps but actually only getting about 900 kbps because the phone lines in my neighborhood don't support the faster speeds. This is bullshit.

And of course I have never seen anything approaching these speeds.

I'm paying for 4mbps and getting 1.5 . Welcome to the club.
