TeleportSandwich
The guys a total dick, but I don't think he should've gotten fired. If he's only going to made an example of rather then be the first in a line of dickish/racist shock jocks that get the axe for saying something equally offensive, then boo on the people responsible for it. Losing most of his sponsership probably would've done him and his show in eventually, anyway. Link to comment
amy
I think it sets a good precedent though, it'll be easier to maintain some kinds of standards on mainstream news after this has happened Link to comment
J-Stop
Most ridiculous bunch of bullshit news so far this year. They didn't silence a racist, they only muted out a old white guy who hosted a radio show and made one comment about a team that lost a big game when they played poorly. XM or Sirius will probably snatch him up in the coming weeks. Link to comment

What kind of standards are those? Censorship and controlled content? Perhaps that is your ideal world, but it's my worst nightmare. I don't know what's happened to you Amy.... but it's frightening. He could very well be the leader of the KKK in his neighborhood, but his radio show was never about racism or practicing hate speech. Frankly I don't even see why 'nappy headed hoes' is offensive to be honest. Especially when some members of the team had nappy hair at one point in time when a newscast brings up an old photo of them. Everyone is acting like they brought down this huge racist radio cast. It's not like Imus in the morning (or whatever its called) is the hal turner show. Even Larry Elder was on the Today Show this morning talking about how Imus's show has actually helped raise money for victims of hurricane Katrina and other drives to help out causes that mainly helped African Americans. So, if he was a huge racist, he has a funny way of showing it. Anyway, it looks like Micheal Richards can rest easy now. Link to comment
Satan
I think it sets a good precedent though, it'll be easier to maintain some kinds of standards on mainstream news after this has happened how is "nappy headed hos" so bad that the guy needs to be fired over it? He didn't say anything worth being fired over, as far as I can tell. Link to comment
Poophy
Major sponsors were already pulling out, and CBS were probably worried that if they didn’t fire him that Jesse Jackson was going to order a boycott of all its radio programs. Firing him was a done for public relations and financial purposes. This shows 2 things, The free market can govern itself, consumers wonted a corporation to do something, and it did. And, Jesse Jackson = terrorist Link to comment
darkon
Imus will have a radio show again pretty soon. So it isn't all that important when you really look at it, just pleases a bunch of pissed off groups who will be irrelevant when he's on satellite. Link to comment

So yeah, he was fired because of what he said. Yes, the stupidity of other people was involved, but it was, at the core, because of what he said. Link to comment
Chris
Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are completely wrong and are blowing the entire situation out of proportion. He made a joke.. an innocent joke not ment to hurt anyone. He apoligized numerous times for it, just like he should have, and even repeatedly stated that at the time he thought it was not racist. If anything, IF ANYTHING AT ALL, he should have just got a fine from the FCC. Essepecially, when Imus said "You people." You can't honestly believe Imus was talking about black people when he said that. http://youtube.com/watch?v=u_ymEfQ3QPw Link to comment
Chris
This pisses me off so fucking much. right after this a kid at my school got suspended for making a joke about a bomb. Imus was a good guy, he made a comment that was in no way offensive or racist. He donates THOUSANDS of dollars to charities yearly, he's not a fucking bad guy. I hate people. lol "Nappy headed hoes" isn't offensive? But I see exactly what you mean. He is a good guy, and represents an older generation. Fuck Al Sharpton and fuck Jesse Jackson. Imus didn't think it was racist anyway, Al and Jesse are calling him out of control. Idiots. Link to comment

Ceraziefish
Firing him was definitely a step too far. I think J-Stop has the right idea. I mean, yes, "nappy-headed hos" is mildy racist and pretty offensive -- but not nearly as bad as a lot of other stuff that goes down every day. Link to comment

Chris
Obviouisly on unfair personal attack? ....Yet Imus didn't actually intend to "attack" the players and black people alike. It was an innocent joke that went too far. If he knew it was racist at the time, he wouldn't have said it. How long has he been on the radio? 30 years or so? I think he knows the rules. He certainitly didn't deserve to get fired. Link to comment
Crube
I was under the assumption anyone of any race can have nappy hair and can be a ho. Remember when Imus called a male basketball team a bunch of pimps or something like that? Link to comment
Gundampilotspaz
I think it was completely racist and insulting, he got what was coming to him. I don't know why anybody is arguing this as freedom of speech, it's obviously an unfair personal attack and shouldn't be allowed on television or radio. Maybe I have a different view of racism than everyone here, but where I'm from, shit like that doesn't fly. Hate speech is still speech, and all speech is free. Link to comment
Natsu
wait..I for one don't agree with the firing of this Imus guy, I never knew what the hell he was in the first place, the network mainly did it to save face, and not lose sponsorships, and to the people who are like ohh its not that big of a comment, I want you to experience being called a racial slur to your face and see how it is, the feeling is totally fucking different believe me that. Natsu
yes I know its freedom of speech..i don't have to hear all that garbage but not every bit of speech is right Link to comment
TeleportSandwich
I don't think public figures should be held to same (lack of scrutiniy) as a private individual. If you have that many people listening to you on a daily basis, you need to watch what you say no matter what your schtick is. And that goes for anyone in the public sphere, not just old white men on the radio Also, I love how the media seems to be focusing on how these comments where racisist and totally ignored how it was remarkably sexisist to call a group of college educated younge women "ho's". lol double standards :awesome: Link to comment
Gundampilotspaz
So we all focus on Don Imus' one little comment while stuff like this http://www.accelerated-e.com/index.php?showtopic=3370 is going on. Good job guys, good job. *golf clap* Link to comment
