You join the group, its a group. Like a group of people. The members of the groups songs are polled together.

Last.fm logs all the music you listen too. This is the AE group all the AE members who have it join and everyone else can see their profiles easier.

This isn't yahoo, you barely get ads on the website. It just helps you keep track of what you listen too. Here is mine, notice the tiny ads. Thats all they give you.
