luke
I give blood which says that you can't if you've ever had anal/oral sex with another man, even if it was with protection. Is there a way around this so I can still give blood? Link to comment

Makil
I'm sad that once I get tattooed I can't give blood anymore. :( I keep trying to make it to blood drives but they are always held at my school during days that I can't make it. Link to comment
Mithrandir
Chances are that that particular policy will be repealed within the next ten years, or at least within your lifetime. Just sit tight. (or you could lie) Link to comment

Makil
can't you give blood again, you just have to wait 6 months or something? I dunno, I just remember that when I gave blood one of the questions was if I had any tattoos. So I'm assuming that if you have tattoos they might not let you give blood incase the needle wasn't sterile or something. Link to comment
margot
from the american red cross "Tattoo Eligibility Guidelines "Wait 12 months after a tattoo if the tattoo was applied in a state that does not regulate tattoo facilities. This requirement is related to concerns about hepatitis. Acceptable if the tattoo was applied by a state-regulated entity using sterile technique. Only a few states currently regulate tattoo facilities, so most donors with tattoos must wait 12 months after tattoo application before donating blood. You should discuss your particular situation with the health historian at the time of donation." Link to comment

Samurai Drifter
(or you could lie) No. Do NOT do this. I'm not entirely sure of the reason behind this rule (probably that AIDs is more common among the gay community), but there is probably a good reason for it, and lying about it could potentially endanger other peoples' health. No Sad Endings
No. Do NOT do this. Why? I don't mean that rhetorically, I'm just actually unfamiliar with why this could be a bad idea. Link to comment
Mithrandir
No. Do NOT do this. Why? It's not like they don't screen the blood. Link to comment
Mithrandir
Except you're completely wrong about that. I come from a fucking family of gay doctors, they all say it's just a homophobic hang-over from the 80's when a bunch of people got HIV through transfusions. Now it's mandatory procedure to screen all blood drawn for HIV, and there's no medical reason to prevent men who have had sex with men from giving blood. In the end, the only people this ends up hurting are the ones who need blood. Link to comment
No Sad Endings
um, that's just a not-so-subtle way of saying "lol homo" If you practice safe sex and the blood is screened, the chances of infected blood going into the system are no higher than with your next sexually active young person. Link to comment
Samurai Drifter
Look, the bottom line is this. They ask the questions for a reason. If you're not going to answer the fucking screening questions honestly, don't even bother. Link to comment

And if the reason is homophobia then the people who need blood are the ones suffering because of unscientific, prejudicial medical practices. Just because the red cross asks you the question doesn't mean they're right to do so, dude. I think I'm inclined to put a little more weight on a doctor's opinion than on yours. Link to comment

If the rule is repealed, then that means there's nothing to worry about. But I'm pretty sure that the Red Cross, employing hundreds of doctors, gives better medical judgement than you guys. I think I'm inclined to put a little more weight on a doctor's opinion than on yours. Good. How many doctors do you think work at the Red Cross? Link to comment

Samurai Drifter
Uh, what about the doctors in my family? Are you implying that their desire to further the "homosexual agenda" supercedes their interest in human health. No. Read my last post. You seem to think that I'm some homophobic moron, which I'm not. I just think that America's leading health organization knows what it's doing, and that a 16 year old kid like the OP shouldn't assume that they know better. Link to comment
