PMA
So finals eh? How's that going for everyone? Anyone else preparing for the WORST WEEK EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD EVER? Or maybe already done? Or maybe you're one of those poor poor saps who has class until the middle of June. Either way, how's that shit treatin ya? Me? I already wrote my two beastly papers (A 20 page and a 13 page), had one exam, and now I have 4 coming up over the next 3 days. To top it all off, I SHOULD be graduating in a few weeks... but I'm totally not (not that any of my friends are, haha). In other words.............. :hardgay: Link to comment
margot
=X i never really cared about finals~ i always seem to do okay on them anyway. i am worried about my math final. i need to do okayish on it or i'm afraid i could fail second semester. Link to comment
ROCKSTEADY
i usually ace my final exams, but they still suck. After that i have to enroll at the local college get my bachelors degree in english, thats when the serious suckitude begins. Link to comment
Ceraziefish
Or maybe you're one of those poor poor saps who has class until the middle of June. *Raises hand.* Still, it balances out, school doesn't start until late September. Link to comment
mst3kjunkie
I'm less concerned about finals right now and more concerned about this thursday and friday, where every one of my classes has a test or project due. Then I can worry about finals 10th week. Link to comment
FaultyClockwork
Took the SAT already, AP US exam is on Friday, French oral next Monday, then after that three regents (French, US History, and Physics) and my in class Math exam that's worth 50% of my 4th quarter grade. I'm really stressed out on top of being constantly exhausted and depressed. Link to comment
Ceraziefish
I've never gone to a school that has final exams, though. At least not in the traditional sense (they hit you with like five giant tests all at once). The class I'm in now didn't even have a final exam last quarter. Link to comment
amy
I just have retarded high school finals The only one I am worried about is physics because if I do really bad I might not graduate =\ Link to comment
PMA
Well my Islamic History of Insular Southeast Asia exam was fairly attrocious. But I'm sure I did fine, and the material wasn't nearly as dense as the last few exams we've had in there. Stars & Galaxies, though, for some STUPID reason (its one of my core "cakewalk" classes) DESTROYED ME. Every other test in that class has been ridiculously easy, but it was fairly attrocious. Drawing HR Diagrams of the entire lifecycle of a low-mass star was just plain STUPID. Sigh... Advanced Mid-east History (800-1400CE) is tomorrow at 7 in the damned morning. I should be studying, but I'm kinda pooped after my first few I've had today. In other words... Link to comment
Ceraziefish
Advanced Mid-east History (800-1400CE) I would LOVE to be taking that class. I hope it was good? Link to comment
PMA
Probably the best non-major class I've taken. Super intense, but totally worth it. Link to comment
Ceraziefish
If my college was doing a medieval Middle East history program I would just about shit my pants. I'm super interested in that kind of stuff but I don't really know where to start. I don't suppose the class had a good booklist you could forward to a brother, eh? Link to comment
PMA
It was actually pretty much seminar-status... so we learned mostly everything from lecture. We only had one text (other than the Webster's Dictionary of Islam), and that was Goldschmidt's Concise History of the Middle East. Pretty dense book actually (Covers the Hijaz about 100 years pre-Muhammad up until the 1980s in about 900 pages), but a fairly good overview. I think its a GREAT starting point if you wanna get a brief overview, and then pursue individual topics that interest you after the fact. There's also an INSANE amount of internet texts we had to read (Mongols and Turkic influence on the Middle East for the most party actually... haha). I dunno what, in general, you're interested in when it comes to Mid-East history (probably the most broad historical region I've focused on in 4 years as a history/anthro major)... if you have any questions or whatever feel free to ask. :hardgay: Link to comment

Rockin'. I have a book on the Crusades, that's pretty much the extent of my knowledge. All I know is that the culture always struck me as really interesting. This is somewhat my girlfriend's fault (she's really into Egyptian style belly dance, whatever that means. I only know what she tells me) but the desire to know about this stuff is older than that. I'm also pretty interested in Mongolian and other Central Asian stuff. I'd like to visit Kyrgyzstan (sp? I mean, I can spell it in Russian but not in English) and most of the other -stans at some point. I'll check out that book... I'll bet they have it at the library here. I'm probably gonna start studying Arabic language next year, too. Link to comment
Siendra
I wrote finals a few weeks ago. I actually got my mind numbing Abstract-whatever/the/fuck/old/russian/dude/was/trying/to/teach final back. 387/400. 97%. I'm happy, but I still don't know what the class was about... Link to comment

WAY more interesting than anything written by the Europeans, if you ask me. Let alone I find it fairly hysterical how small of an impact the Crusades were on Middle Eastern history from the Persian/Arab perspective. I mean, from the "Western" standpoint, the Crusades were a big fuckin deal. But frankly, it's usually only a footnote in Arabian scholarship. Hahaha 2. Keep in mind that ALOT of Transoxanian (Central Asia) history is pretty intertwined with Middle Eastern history, specifically Persia. So as a general rule, if you learn about one you're more than likely going to get a bit of background on the other. I'll try and dig around for some of the more interesting Transox historiographies. If you're interested, the most interesting stuff along the lines of Mongols and Transoxania (In my humble opinion): Timur Lang (Tamerlane in bastardized anglicization, if you're familiar with Tamerlane) The Qizilbash (One of the more interesting militant groups of all time) Hulegu (Mainly he's awesome because he rolled the last Abassid caliph up in a rug and had him trampled to death by his men and horses) 3. From what I heard, Kyrgystan and Uzbekistan are both horribly awesome to visit... but also some of the most frustrating places to travel in the world. 4. Ya, I'm studying a bit of Arabic right now (I pretty much NEEDED a bit of background for this class). It's not easy, I'll say that much. 5. Dude... thanks for helping me review for my exam tomorrow. Hahaha Link to comment

To the Arabs and Persians it was like "Whut, some Franks showed up and conquered what's essentially the least civilized part of their empire? Um... Call up the army? I guess?" 2. A very little bit. Most of that was in relation to my Russian history class, though, so the books mostly focused on the Golden Horde. 3. Ya, I'm studying a bit of Arabic right now (I pretty much NEEDED a bit of background for this class). It's not easy, I'll say that much. Kyrgystani cure for pretty much any disease; eat two slices of raw garlic, drink two glasses of vodka. I hear it works wonders. I'm studying Russian right now... I was kind of hoping Arabic would be easier. I think the script looks beautiful, so there's that (Russian looks sweet typed, but the handwriting uses a fairly different alphabet, which isn't nearly as cool -- although Russian is still a sweet language). Next year my schedule is looking like Russian II, Arabic I, and a bunch of independent projects (woot for liberal arts colleges). 5. Dude... thanks for helping me review for my exam tomorrow. PMA
Kyrgystani cure for pretty much any disease; eat two slices of raw garlic, drink two glasses of vodka. I hear it works wonders. Oh lord.... that's fairly uncanny. I have almost the EXACT same cure for colds and hangovers. Crush a clove of garlic in the bottom of a shotglass and take it with a shot of Vodka. Weird. So I have officially begun studying for my two Mideast tests tomorrow. Lucky for me, they compliment eachother fairly well (One is 800-1400CE, the next is contemporary MEast). My only complaint about Middle Eastern/Arabic studies? Assholes just HAVE to name their kids after Muhammad, Abdullah, Husayn, and Ali. Shit gets SO confusing during the Islamic revival when you have about 30 Alis running around in Egypt. *Sigh* Link to comment
John
I have a final in AP history tomorrow...but it isn't my AP exam. The real AP exam is on Friday. So is prom which, by the way, is my responsibility to make sure it happens (which is retarded if you ask me. Seniors should plan prom because they actually care since it's their last big thing in high school. I don't give a shit). And I have golf matches all week except Friday and those aren't usually over till 6 plus the 30 minute drive home. I have a normal physics test on Wednesday, but that's the last one of the year since all the seniors in the class will be leaving next Friday. I got exempt from my English final so I'll only have to take my Pre-Calc and Physics finals the second week of June. So basically, this week is gonna rape me. Link to comment
DreamerGirl
I don't really mind my psych tests, because it all starts to repeat after a while and it just gets simple.... My chemistry final I'm a little worried about, but I have a chem test tomorrow that is a lot of math and I need to look over it a little because I skipped the review and I haven't been doing much in that class. (Yes, I have a chem test this week and a final next week, it sucks.) My French presentation tomorrow is really scaring me. I'm supposed to talk in French for 10 minutes about "Les Gaulois" and I haven't even started it. On the plus side I already took the final, but I only got a B. >_< I also work 5 days this week at 5-6 am so I'm lacking on sleep a bit too. Link to comment
Proserpexa
My school made a new rule last year that Seniors don't have to take finals at all, which is pretty sweet, but I do have a shitload of papers and project due this week. Link to comment
Satan
High school sucks I tried to post earlier, but it wouldn't go through. I was going to say that I didn't think I had a math exam today, but it turns out that our teachers weren't joking about giving us a test. They were joking about it being on everything we've learned since February. Some of it they never taught, some was before February. Wednesday we supposedly have to write an essay. I might write mine up in advance, on the topic of how much they suck, and post it in the rant pit. Other good ideas include not coming, handing in a blank sheet of paper, and answers such as "42" "NO!" and "cheese" Other than that, I Have Friday- AP American History Monday - Chem house exam. Shorter but harder than the AP Tuesday- AP Chem Wednesday- AP English (language and composition, I think) After that, my year might as well be over, since American will be a joke, Chem won't be as bad (we'll have already taken our finals, but he'll find something to make us juniors do) and math won't exist. I'll still have to take some regents though. Link to comment
