Need help picking a song...

Recommended Posts

In roughly two weeks, my friends and I will have an opportunity to play a song or two for my school...nothing big of course. There is a sort of theme and it's very odd: Rollercoasters. What would be a good song to play that illustrates an anxious build-up a ridiculous middle section and a chilled ending?

Dimmu Borgir - Reptile

or anything off of the album

The ultimate roller coaster song. Imagine a rollorcoaster in the dark with this playing - instrumently works too.

I don't know what your looking for though, or what any of the musicans participating play.

There is a drummer [who does not have double bass skills right now].

Three guitarists including myself [very optional, I don't need a song with three guitar parts unless we play a song where I just play rythm on my seven and we get two others for lead/harmonies/etc...but I love playing lead :hardgay:]

One excellent six string bass player [He is the man]

One who can play keyboards if I need him to.

What I'm looking for is something that's not too heavy, but not boring. The length is workable if it's 6-8 minutes, it'll be the only one. If it's shorter 3-5 minutes, then two. Last time, the theme was easier, it was confusion. So, we played Iced Earth's Stand Alone and then we played Iron Maiden's Blood Brothers. They weren't expecting Blood Brothers, it just so happens that all the good musicians in my school happen to be metalheads, so they didn't expect an easy going song, especially following a fairly heavy [for my school] song. So, it's conceptual for the most part, I was thinking kind of like Metallica's Call Of Ktulu, but two weeks isn't enough to learn the myriad of solos. But something like that. Where it starts off kind of calm, maybe spooky and then it builds on itself and then crushes your bones and melts your face by the time it's over. I also had some Racer X in mind, but again, can't learn shred craziness like that in two weeks.

For the love of God, do Battery and Call of Ktulu. Film it, so I can watch for :headbang: -ness.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, but recent events have shifted the premise:

My school is closing down after this school year is over, which is gay as fuck cause I'm a junior. Anyway, we're doing Iced Earth's A Question Of Heaven, cause it suits the occasion...[it was a private Christian school and it's closing, so AQOH = lawl] I'll get someone to video this one. First practice is after school tomorrow, wish us luck.

Whatever. It's my choice.

It's going pretty good so far. We're taking some interesting routes. To open, instead of just the acoustic/clean guitar, we're having someone play the same arpeggios on the piano, while on my other friends plays bass. The drummer will be with them playing a jambe[sp? It's like a bigger bongo thing]. Then for the "What exactly" and "Lord I pound" verses, I'm doing death vocals under my friend's singing. For the backing choir of that section as well as the end ["Question me not" & "Rising"] will be sung by my school's choir class. My friend will also be getting some vocal training from the music teacher. It's getting fairly epic, I hope it all comes together, but we only have 6 days until and our only other group practice will be this Sunday. Again, I'll have someone record this and wish us luck.

w00t update:

Things are progressing well. We've changed a few things, but through it all we haven't deviated from the form too much. The true ending is pretty sick, but I won't give it away. Our [the school's] sound system sounds like absolute dog shit, which doesn't effect me, cause I'm bringing the ol' Line 6 120W. However, the other electric guitarist is using my Ibanez sixer and my BOSS stompbox, so hopefully our sound dude will get it straightened out. Our drummer is struggling a little bit, but he'll be fine for the show. Our vocalist is a bit of a...primadonna...at some points it seems like he stops listening to the music because he tries to hold notes longer than they need to be held which causes him to be late for the next verse. I'll straighen his shit out. The choir teacher talked to me today and we ran some shit with the basist and the vocalist. Our bassist is sick and spent two hours diagramming the harmonies for the choir. The choir teacher is pulling his best 10 for special practice and is giving one of his only class periods of the whole week for those 10 to work on their sections. He's a good dude. Tomorrow morning is next group practice with everything: Choir, keyboards, 3 guitars, bass, drums, vocalist and backing vocalists. I'll have someone record the whole thing on D-Day. But in the mean time, wish us luck, cause we're lacking a little at this point, but if we keep up the hard work, it's gonna be transcendental.
