Deathnote Ending

Did the ending suck as much as I thought it did? Did the entire second half suck as much as I thought it did?

Honestly, I loved it early on. L and Light were both kick ass, and Ryuk was cool. Hell Watari was pretty kick ass, Light's dad was actuallly okay, and even Misa wasn't as bad early on.

Near and Mello both sucked. Mello seemed a bit out of his league, and Near was trying to fill in L's shoes, but it just didn't seem right.

Is it just me or were the women in that all tools? There was one smart female character, but she was killed before she had a chance.

There is no difference between L, Light, and Near, except that Light found the deathnote. Mello was a bit different, I think, but he would still would have acted the same. They were all egotistical and put their egos before anything else.

First of all, yeah. Death Note is really, really sexist (or at least it comes off that way). The only female characters who are really intelligent in any way shape or form were Naomi Misora (but she also had one of the most cringeworthy moments when she quickly deduced that Kira was on the same bus as Raye Penber and then Raye was like "ahahaha no honey you're a housewife now let me do all the thinking"), Halle Lidner, and Misa when she was first introduced, and then she just became Light's fangirl sidekick.

And yeah, all three of the main detective types put their pride as a higher priority than anything else, though I disagree that L or Near would have done the same thing that Light did (because whilst the former two were partially ego-driven, they weren't amoral sociopaths like Light).

The second half is... really mediocre. It would have been better if it had just been Light vs. L, with L ultimately coming out on top. I wouldn't have minded Mello in a supporting role near the end, but ultimately the best part of the entire second half is Light finally getting his (and most importantly, Matsuda fucking his shit up because really, it was the investigation team that I still had an emotional connection with by the end).

- Masked Man #2... wait, isn't he supposed to have a gimmick or something?

What would L or Near have done? I think they would have experimented, and then they would have decided that such a useful tool needs to be used, and that they are obviosuly the only ones intelligent enoguh and moral enough to do so. Light wasn't as much of an amoral sociopath in the beginning. Had he not founf the deathnote but instead been trained in the PD, he would likely have become much like L.

I think that given that Ryuk had to kill Light, it should have ended with Light killing everyone, saying "I've won. Its over" Ryuk then agrees, finishes eating an apple, and commenting on how his entertainment is over, kills Light. That way, everybody wins. Light wins, Kira's reign ends. That way, the only one who's ego is vindicated is dead.

I did like the team, but they were just tools at the end, not characters.

First of all, saying that Death Note is sexist is just plain stupid. What about Takada? Lidner? Hell, Misa was intelligent herself, even though she always let her emotions control her. And there were plenty of weak and or stupid male characters too- like Matsuda, and Demegawa. The characters filled in the roles that were right for them.

I didn't think the ending sucked, though I did expect Near to have a better formulated plan than just accidentally finding out about Light's and moving fast enough to save his ass. And what was with Light trying to write down Near's name on the notebook piece hidden in his watch at the end? Even if he would have killed Near there were still about 10 people in the room, and definitely not enough time (or room on the paper) to kill them all.

there were two distinct levels of intelligence.

1) Uber genius- 3-4 members of this club, depending on whether or not mello makes the cut. all male

2) Mortals. Contains many subsets. Generally thought of as tools by the above level.

Misa doesn't really count, since she's a tool when she gets the note, and a moron/nonfactor afterwards. Takada and lidner were on a high enough level of intelligence, but there were men on that plane too, and they were all treated as tools anyway. There were no women on the highest highest level, there was a mix of mena nd women on the lower tiers.

By the time Light was writing down the names, he was already batshit insane, out of plans, and had gone through that whole breakdown sequence.

My other theory for what he wanted is that at least if Near dies its a draw. Kira is caught, but Near is dead. Neither side achieves true victory.

Yeah, I agree with that, but three characters being male isn't enough to make a series sexist.

1) i hold that its at least 4 (not sure what to do with the whole Yotsuba thing, I guess they don't count either)

2) It is when they're like gods and everyone else is a pawn.

That has to do with their individual genius; not the overall superiority of the male sex. The other males in the series are just as much pawns as the women.

Not to mention, if you want to put Mello on the top level, you should put Misa there too. Sure she's completely used by Light, but she was a formidable force early on in the series, and almost killed L by herself.

but its a superiority that only males achieve. In other words, while both genders are capable of stupidity, only males are capable of brilliance.

she was a froce, but she wasn't smart. She had the eyes, the note, and surprise, that's it.

She actually was pretty smart. She disguised herself completely, arranged a meeting place for her and Light that didn't put them at risk and, again, almost killed L by herself. She's on the same level as Mello, in my opinion.

given all of the advantages that she had, I think that the almost tells the whole story. Keep in mind,t he reason she failed is that she was caught, and because of ordinary evidence, not L's supreme intelligence.

Also my opinoon may be slightly shaded by the way she regresses as the stroy goes on. In 6 and 7, she helps, but her key contributions come from who she is (a model, loved by Rem.) Without the deathnote, she never could have taken over a major crime syndicate the way Mello did. And as i pointed out, she becomes progressively more stupid and less important as the story goes on. By the end, its just the three guys, then just the two guys.

Anyway, the reason the uber genuises are all male is because they're the focus of the story, and the story is aimed at males. It's just that simple.

I thought the ending was great. Everything between L's death and the conclusion was pretty meh, though. With the exception of some events like Mellow and Near's first introduction, the raid on Mellow and the mafia, and Takada's kidnapping. All the rest was just Near catching up to Light every few chapters.

The very last moments of the end where Light is bleeding and going insane asking where Misa and Takada were was really :awesome:.

I just finished it and liked the ending. The only part that kinda bothered me was that Light didnt go out completley epic. I wanted him to atleast go out like a man. HE whined like a girl for a bit. But I think the reason some people didnt like the second half is because L was so awesome that it made the second half seem worse then it was. L should have owon.
