margot
Eating disorders: (bulimia, anorexia nervosa, binge eating, ect) do you think they are legitimate problems or just selfish and vain behavior? Post whatever thoughts you have towards them. Link to comment
Arcane
Yes, I believe they are legitimate problems, often brought on by vain and selfish behavior. A person with an eating disorder needs whatever help they can get. Link to comment
Ceraziefish
Yep. There are people who think they're too fat, and then there are people who literally can't eat. It's sort of a problem at my school. People with eating disorders do indeed need all the help they can get. Link to comment

Pamuya
i think there are cases where it's selfish and vain and then there are severe cases that are legit. i went to middle school with a girl who went through a 'phase' of anorexia, and i believed her to be one of the most selfless of my friends, but she eventually came out of it after fainting one day. i do believe it can be a problem in the brain and not just selfishness. or there are cases where parents or instructors (cheerleading coaches, dance instructors, gymnastics, modelling) that are CONSTANTLY telling you 'you need to loose weight!!!' and through no fault of the girl's (usually a girl) own (well, maybe some) she develops the disorder. there are some people on a message board (psychiatric support group) i go to that have serious problems with eating disorders. i do believe it can get to a point that there is a real problem and medication and nutrition therapy needs to be involved. edited to add: bulimia and anorexia are also closely related with depression. don't always just loop them in with vain and selfish behavior. i really hate to see people do that. yes, many cases are selfish and vain, but there are severe, legit problems that are from depression where people can't see clearly. this is when people really need help and support, and not an extra slab of meat put onto their plate. Samurai Drifter
They are disorders, definitely, though possibly brought on by being too vain. Edited January 10, 2006 by Samurai Drifter Link to comment
Wind
I wouldn't say its being too vain or whatever your all saying, but I think its used as an inappropraite / wrong means of relieving stress. I mean, people binge eat and throw up and supposdly they feel better after, different means of stress relief are availblible and should be used. Link to comment
GummyBearOfDoom
Well, anorexia nervosa is caused by some one a a little bit overweight dieting the wrong way. Either by first cutting out meals then using that maybe only drinking water somedays. So they aren't getting enough food. Then the bodies metabolism get's ruined and the body can't tell when it's hungry. After that they usually focus in on one body part and think of themselves as fat. It's all in the brain. Bassicly when your body starves itself it can't get back into the cycle of things. Alot of people who got back from the holocaust died from anorexia up to 20 years later because of anorexia. So it isn't because someone is selfish or anything like that. There are even anorexics and bulemics in starving countries. Some people can get the disorder easier. Usually people that are perfectionists. Link to comment

Wind
Eating disorders are terrible ways of dealing with stress/weight problems/mental problems. There are safer and smarter ways to fight these problems. People who are bulimic/anorexic are stupid, and most likely depressed. By the way, why is there always a thread related to this issue? because its a serious debate and discussion that effects more people in our daily lives than we probrably realize. Link to comment
amy
I think that if someone has an eating disorder, they need help the same way people with depression, drug addiction or alcoholism need help. *waves congrats flag* Really any disorder is "vain" because it encourages concentration on the self and "oh, MY problems" that are hindering you from helping others, but i don't think they should be considered that way, since it just hurts the other person. Yeah, it's a very serious problem and rehab is a must when they get to an unhealthy weight. Link to comment
