cant wait for thursday.... going to see them. I was watching some of the 2008 videos (bad quality) but the stage set up is INSANE. like endless flashing seizure inducing lights of endless changes colors and a screen behind them of static and pinks and random colors rythmatic, lasers and lights flashing at the crowd, during one song I saw a giant Cross above the stage.

I"M PUMPED.

while we'll at it, for anyone who saw the crow... NiN covered the cure's Dead Souls and RIP IT UP

edit: and omg in closer the crowd surfing.. I've never been to show with legit crowd surfing only fucking hardcore dancing and moshing.. I'm gonna have blast.

He is a hero. A hero of the musical industry and a musical genius.

Most musicians are addicts, last time I checked John Lennon was addicted to heroin until his murder...

actually john lennon quit before he died, he wrote the song 'cold turkey' about it.

though he might have gotten addicted again after that.

anyway trent reznor ain't much of a hero of the music industry anymore hahaha

also frank zappa was clean his whole life (except for drinking and supposedly he smoked weed like ten times in his whole life)

It isn't a reason to judge a musician though. Reznor isn't less of an artist because of drug addictions. And for the record I'm sure brilliant classical musicians (from the past) had their own vices. (Alcohol, Alcohol with Cocaine in it, Opium, etc.)

I wasn't saying it makes them less of an artist. Only saying it doesn't make them more of an artist.

the 3.4 million copies of the slip that downloaded in the first week tells otherwise.

Also he's been clean since before With Teeth

Yes, thank you for proving my point?

He's not much of a hero of the music industry if he's telling people to pirate his music, now is he? That's all I'm saying.

It is good for him, though. I've got a similar feeling about music... It shouldn't be sold. Like the other day I was checking out Pandora for the first time, and it's pretty cool, except for all the lame shit that hamstrings your freedom to listen to music because of their licensing deals. Can you imagine how awesome a place like Pandora would be if there was no RIAA, DMCA, or any bullshit like that?

And, of course, I didn't mean to say anything bad about any artists. Doing drugs is totally fine.

What CF is saying is that asking people to steal a product is counterproductive for an industry that thrives on making money. So that doesn't make Trent a hero of the music industry, but it may make him a hero of music as an art and form of expression.

Of course his actions won't have any noticeable effect on the industry in the long run, but it's a noble attempt.

Artists are following his lead. I would say that it will have a noticable effect.

It all depends on perspective. If a multi-billion dollar industry loses a few artists, but are still making billions of dollars then that wouldn't effect them at all.

Not to mention that they can and most likely will replace those artists with a manufactured group or (less likely) artists they have discovered and make billions off of them.

Losing a few drops from the bucket doesn't matter when it's raining.

Yeah, I think that the music industry is starting to feel it. Or, rather, they aren't starting to lose any money yet, but they know they're going to.

Music industry is dead in terms of record labels serving hard discs. In rainbows was as start, then 1.4 million copies of Ghosts sold in the first week, then the free NiN cd the slip had something like 3.6 million downloads in the first week.

First album going triple platinum

The EP after going single platinum

Downward spiral (3rd CD) going 4x platinum

The Fragile going double platinum

With Teeth reaching #1 on billboard and going Gold (2x plat in canada)

then Ghosts reaching 14 on US charts as an online only album

and The Slip reaching 13 on the US charts as a free online only album.

Not to mention doing the sound-track and sound effects to the classic FPS Quake. Thus the Nine Inch Nail gun with the NiN logo. God i gotta re-install that game.

I'd say they're missing some money.

"for the original Quake.

"I really did [the music for Quake] because I was into the game. It wasn't for the money, because I didn't make anything, really, and it wasn't because I wanted to appeal to some new demographic. When [creator] John Carmack said, 'Hey, one of the new weapons is a nail gun. What if the ammo packs had the nine inch nails logo on it?' I was like 'Hell, yeah - that would be cool!'" recalls the edgy rocker, who had been looking for a diversion. "
