Baltar
The Empire at war demo came out yesterday. Anyone else download it? What did you think of it? Link to comment

Arcane
I have it installed and ready to go... but I have one more class today before I'll get a chance to play it. Belial played it last night and told me he was slightly disappointed with it.. so I'm not as excited to play as I was. But still, it looks awesome. Link to comment
Arcane
DOUBLE POST OMG I just finished up the demo, and while I don't think it's going to be as good as I was hoping for, it still was pretty good. It seems to me that the single player Galactic Conquest mode is going to be the emphasis of the game, which looks like it should be a lot of fun. It almost seems kind of like Rome: Total War, except there's not really any of the civil management stuff involved. You move your troops around on a galactic map and engage the enemy which causes you to go into the RTS mode. While Belial told me he was very disappointed with the space combat aspect of the game, I found that part to be more entertaining than the ground combat. I thought it was really cool how the larger ships had different hardpoints that you could take out like laser turrets, sheild generators, engines, etc. And most of the ships seem to have some added ability such as proton torpedoes which penetrate shields, or divert power to guns which reduces sheild regeneration and speed but increases rate of fire for a short duration. Multiplayer is what I'm really interested in though. I was hoping for something that might be able to replace DoW: WA for awhile, but it's not really looking that way. In the end, this game doesn't seem like it's going to out do Dawn of War, but I'll at least download it. If the multiplayer ends up being cool then I may buy it in order to play online. Baltar
I agree I liked the space combat far more the nthe grounfd combat. the demo was a lot shorter then I thought, I finished it in 40 minutes. It was good, not the greatest thing around, but still pretty damn good. I enjoyed the space combat myself, reminded me of RTW like Arcane said. Link to comment
Gundampilotspaz
I think we haven't gotten a really good picture. We were just given this tiny easy mission. But did you see all those planets out there? To think of all of them in play I can see a very fun and challenging experience to keep factories going, to try and out smart your opponent. There is a lot that will be going on. And I managed to fill up my population cap. With only two planets and a 56 cap I managed to get: 3 X-wings 3 Ywings 1 Corellian Corvette 3 Nebulon B 14 tanks 22 infintary units (both kinds) 1 artillery Just from TWO planets.... this will get insane, because you are going to have a massive force with a 20 planet map. I definately agree that the campaign mode will no doubt be awesome. I'm a little worried about mutliplayer options though. Multiplayer might rock my socks off, but from my impressions so far it seems that this is really meant to be a single player game. Link to comment
Gundampilotspaz
If the game allows the computer to take over some battles and have multiple battles at one time. Multiplayers will be great. Link to comment
tango
will be downloading tonight or tomorrow. I'm really interested in trying out. However, what I'm hearing isn't the best I had hoped. Still, I'll have to try it out for myself to see. Link to comment

Belial
I was very disasppointed that space battles were on a 2-Dimensional plane and not in 3D space. I mean, Star Wars: Rebellion, which was made in '98, had 3D space battles! Link to comment

When the fighters wents at it they are moving in 3 dimensions. Link to comment

I mean, Star Wars: Rebellion, which was made in '98, had 3D space battles! When I think about it, making the space battles in fully maneuverable 3d space would not really add much more depth to the gameplay. In fact, I think it would just end up over-complicating things by making you have to screw around with camera angles more often. Link to comment
Ceraziefish
Didn't Homeworld have fully 3D space battles? I never played that game but I was interested to see how they did it. Link to comment

Belial
And the thing about the Homeworld games is that after the intial 15 minutes that it took to learn how to manuver the camera, you were good to go. And once you had mastered the camera, there were some really cool moments where you totally felt like you were floating in deepspace witnessing these epic space conflicts. Empire at War should make me feel that way too, but I fear that it won't. Link to comment
tango
Well I can honestly say I love it since I've played it soo much. I can't wait for the release (see sig). My favorite feature is the "movie mode" where you can view the battle like a movie. Such a sweet addition to the game. Gonna rock. GPS- "I see many long nights ahead in our future." Link to comment
Excel
Homeworld was and still is one of the most amazing RTS' of all time. I just finished installing the demo (Fucking 1.5 GB? Christ.) and will be trying it out... Eventually. Link to comment
Baltar
don't let the size fool you. It's big but there is not a ton of gameplay Link to comment
Arcane
don't let the size fool you. It's big but there is not a ton of gameplay Yeah, I don't get the huge size of it either. There's like like 5 units available to use in the game and 2 maps (outside a few tutorial maps). There's a lot of voice over stuff, but that shouldn't take up that much space. Link to comment
Excel
I skipped right over the tutorials, and went to the MEAT of the game. I can't quite shake the feeling of "Command & Conquer In Space". Maybe it's the way tanks drive over units so easily, or the way tanks explode leaving some poor little soldier behind with half health (One of my favorite parts of C&C. Just how do they survive those explosions?). The graphics are kinda plain, but some of the effects were pretty spiffy. It ran good too, which is one of my biggest concerns. But overall, Dawn Of War looks like it kicks the crap out of this, actual-combat-wise. The Galactic Map and all is neat, and the big Vader's head under "X-Wing Strengths" made me giggle for some reason. Link to comment

Leave it to lucas arts to do something outragous like make the Demo 1.5GB, which gets the blood goin because you think monsterous amounts of demo, and then your just dissipointed with 35 minutes of action. On another note the Millenium Falcon has "un-canny Luck" and it just kicks a ton of ass, so it gets to be Invincible for 15 seconds as its ability. Link to comment
Excel
I actually looked up some information on the game. It is being developed by Petroglyph, which is comprised of many former members of Westwood Studios, best known for their work on the Command & Conquer series This explains a lot to me.
