Belial
Has anyone read it? Are there any quotes that you think are cool, even in the secular sense? Link to comment
amy
I've only read a little bit, about as much in latin as english, I was trying to work on my reading comprehension. but i liked what I read in the secular sense <3;, religion I think is great because to believe in it you've got to reject cynicism and I hate cynicism. xD because of that the bible is not all grey and depressing "spiritus quidem promptus est caro autem infirma" Link to comment
Arcane
Has anyone read it? Are there any quotes that you think are cool, even in the secular sense? Nope, I haven't read it. I really would like to one of these days, strictly in more of a mythological sense. The Old Testament has some really cool stories in it. Link to comment
Samurai Drifter
Has anyone read it? Are there any quotes that you think are cool, even in the secular sense? I've actually read most of it... and all I have to say is that Revelation is kick ass. Also I like the stories of David's mighty men who fought off armies by themselves. Link to comment
rockerluke
I've read it from start to finish several times. Great book, though there are really lots of contradictions. Link to comment
GummyBearOfDoom
I've read it from start to finish several times. Great book, though there are really lots of contradictions. Well since the bible wasn't written from only one person of course there will be statements contradicting eachother. Link to comment
Belial
Judges is a really cool book in the Bible too. Its about the guerrilla fighters of early Israel who were constantly fighting off invading peoples and nations. Link to comment
darkon
I've read some of it, had to do a lot for school. Judges and Revelation are very, very good books. I can't pull out any quotes right now, but there are a lot that I've taken note of that can help guide one's life in the secular or humanist sense. Link to comment
Venom112
Yeah I've read it. Revelations is almost certainly the best part of the tome. What with all the dragons, eternal fires, iron rods, marks of beasts, and what not that show up. Proverbs however is a very boring part because of all the lame lessons taught. Link to comment
margot
I haven't read most of The Bible, but it's really fascinating. side note: There is a girl in my biology class named Genesis, I just kind of stood there brain dead when I saw that. Link to comment
Poophy
These are quotes dealing with the four housemen of the apocalypse(War, Famine, Pestilence, and Death.), taken form the book of revelations, chapter 6 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. Link to comment
Samurai Drifter
Oh yeah, I have to add this. Ecclesiastes is also good. So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was greivous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and then he must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun? All his days his work is pain and grief, even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless. Kreutz
Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, If anything but death parts you and me. Link to comment
rockerluke
Ecclesiastes is my favorite book. Proverbs too, some quotes are even funny. Link to comment
uniform_motion
There is no doubt in my mind that we aren’t the only moving and living things in the entire universe. God, the idea alone, really doesn’t seem impossible to me. It’s merely an idea that has been tarnished by certain religious followings. I believe in loving all and helping your common man out, and that, to me, is the purest form of prayer. It’s a sign that you’re honoring the idea of a God, of a purer and more beautiful truth that rises above mankind’s faults. I have no problem pretending to believe in the Christian God around my friends, because it makes them happy. Do I need to believe in a God to truly give homage to the idea of such a being? I don’t think so. I’m an atheist, baby. However, when religious views turn bad and angry, like many do, I utterly detest religion. It's just my contradiction I guess. The Bible isn't something I'm really interested in as a religious document, because to me it's just something a bunch of stuff historians wrote to teach morals and preach a religion in which I don't believe in. However, I might just read the Bible as a historical document. (I hope I don't sound stupid in this post.) Link to comment
John
Well, I'm a pastor's kid, so I've read a bit of the Bible. It's funny to see how so many people bash Christianity/Biblical stuff, yet they haven't even read the Bible. Link to comment

Except it’s not just Christianity, its Philosophies in general. Source material in an argument is vital. Period. Link to comment

Yes they are, but there's a reason they're boring. They're specific instructions to the Israelites in that time on how to live and numbers pretty much useless to people today. Link to comment
Anime Gee
Oh yes. I've read it many times! ( ^_^) <3 I like Mathew 7:12 the most! Go read it & find out what it says! (^o^ ) <3 Link to comment
Belial
(genesis=boring, though.) I beg to differ. 4:6 And Jehovah said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 4:7 If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door: and unto thee shall be its desire, but do thou mayest rule over it. I think thats one of the most important parts of the bible. Its says to man that it is up to him to conquer sin. And thats what makes man great, he has the choice. I like Mathew 7:12 the most! The golden rule is indeed a worthy quote. Link to comment

HappyLittleBoozer
Ezekiel 25:17 The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee. Link to comment
Ceraziefish
The closest I ever got to reading the Bible was reading the EV Bible, a guide on how to write mods for the original Escape Velocity game. It was informative, but not a particularly exciting read. Link to comment
