So one of our members is making the rounds in the writing world....

Recommended Posts

Figured I would pop in to impart this story.

I am a fan of Vice.com, great site with off-color content directed at artsy-fartsy types that enjoy the weirder side of life. I generally don't venture around the site too much outside of the usual bookmarks, but there was a story simply titled, "Jeremy Lin". For the uninitiated, Jeremy Lin was a basketball phenom earlier this year who was frequently associated with the phrase, "Linsanity". I do not care for most sports in the least, but I was attracted to the article and read it to completion. It was raw, unabashed writing that took no prisoners and did not apologize for it's narcissistic overtones. "By Marie Calloway" it read, so I figured I would at least Google her picture and see what such a talented writer looks like.

And who do I see? Our very own Marie sitting in the top result. It took me a bit of searching, but there is no doubt that it is her.

So, I figured that I would seek her out on Facebook and say "hi" and tell her how I enjoyed her work and all that jazz. I messaged her and she basically told me that she had no idea who I was and did not know what Accelerated-E is. She is friends with other AE members on Facebook, not mention there is a picture of Robin right there on her page.

Just strange. Carry on.

calling a blogger who gained popularity for a piece about being a prostitute in London a talented writer is sorta like calling a low budget arthouse hardcore porn director who gets a lot of hits on Xvideos a talented indie filmmaker. sure, the work is subjective, but...

i don't have anything against Marie's writing, but i thought it was interesting that the comments on the Vice article mirror those from the New York Observer article i linked to a few months back in RT.

Huh. I read an article about her like five months ago. Didn't realize it was Marie, of course. Small world.

I don't consider myself to be on the up and up of news in the literary world, so if it old, then so be it.

The work, on a subjective level, is impressive and engaging; but I can also get on board with some of the vitriol in comments on Vice. You almost don't want to admit to yourself that you know that this person is a summation of all the things she used to go on about online in the past. I have been having a hard time deciding if what I am reading is excellently written candid sexual encounters, or some circlejerk to Consumerist-Marxist sympathizers embroiled in deep confusion about the true meaning of the feminist movement.

In the end, after I read "Adrian Brody" (after the Jeremy Lin piece), I just ended up feeling very sorry for her. If her works are supposed to be autobiographical, then there are some serious acceptance issues tied in with using sex as a currency for mental stability that need to be addressed. She/this character uses men as a device to satisfy her own loneliness and it becomes pretentious and insulting after awhile.

Been tracking this one for a while... but from what I recall of our various conversations years back, Marie was always a strange bird.

well i am behind in times as well..weird she acted like she didnt know ae i suppose..oh well

Doesn't surprise me much. She used to post some pretty embarrassing stuff on here that would do very little to promote her in a career field that is mostly image.

Yeah I think she's a good writer. She is kinda weird about most AE people. I don't really know why. Unfortunately for people move on from social groups for many reasons. I do think that we should try to keep her real name under our collective hats (not that AE is some huge security leak or anything, I really doubt anyone could find it) but she does have a pen name for a reason and we should respect that.

Oh also we randomly were in Portland at the same time and met up IRL, she's hilarious.

Oh thank god. I was worried this was about me for a second, seeing just the title.

Anyways, yeah pretty much every girl who's ever posted on AE is weird in her own way. This doesn't shock me too much. Especially considering all the stuff she posted over the years.

I wouldn't even consider relating what marie does to "arthouse hardcore porn on Xvideos", especially considering that she's being heavily supported by tao lin (a well known hatehimorlovehim author in the literary world(i've only read one of his books)). also, saying that because she doesn't have published work (I'm assuming because of the term 'blogger') in this day and age is a little ridiculous.

I do hate and love what she does at the same time. and I'm glad that she's getting recognition but god damn if there is one thing that will make me uncomfortable until the end of time it's the way she discusses sex, but at the same time it is incredibly interesting and engaging, different if I'm blunt about it. in any other case I think I would think what she writes to be incredibly contrived but she does a great job of appearing honest in her words.

also, she has always been weird as fuck and i think we can all agree with siendra in that holy shit we are all fucking weird. she messaged me on facebook and said "hi" and I'm afraid to talk to her because who the fuck knows what she's up to.

funny you talk of what she writes with the dealing of sex....i read her blog or whatever after this post...and i found it slightly what the hell....and oddly enough to keep reading it...

I only half know of this. Simply because I read the article after Robin posted it on Facebook. But WHO THE FUCK IS MARIE was I just not around when she was here or some shit? But considering for the past god knows how many years I have frequainted this place like santa clause (mainly around the time when the fantasy football league needs reviving) I suppose I could actually miss shitz. BTW fantasy football league needs to be reactivated spread the word peeps.
