College Mail

if you have taken the PSAT you are probably being ridiculously marketed and receiving multiple mails daily :D

questions: do you actually read them? are they helpful? best/worst college mails? did anyone promise you financial aid? are you getting all this weird army stuff? have you gotten anything cool like pencils?

I have a story, yesterday I got a manila bubble envelope that seemed full of stuff, and I was like "OH YES!!!! I heard my high-SAT friend got a bunch of free pencils! I WANT FREE PENCILS!" so I excitedly opened it and pulled out the contents only to find

THREE SEALED PACKAGES OF AIR

and a college brochure

I HATE MARKETING

If it wasn't for mail, I probably wouldn't be looking seriously at going to Arcadia.

Same for me with Dickinson College :D <3

My sister is psychic (seriously) so I can just put the mail in her hand and she says if it would be good or not. To test I put many letters in her hands while she was blindfolded that she hadn't seen before and what she said correlated exactly with what I felt.

I try not to take that option though. xD I have 10 unopened envelopes on my desk and they all look very BORING

Oh, I've been getting those.

Hopefully it will be over soon, and I'll start getting some acceptance letters.

My parents are just like "Hey, you got a letter from *Insert college here.*" My response is something along the lines of "Great, I already know where I want to go to college, and if I don't get in there I will be emotionally crushed because I am a fragile being."

Thank GOD for Canada. We don't receive stuff like that -- only if you ask to receive mail from certain Universities/Colleges...otherwise they don't spam you with mail. Atleast...they haven't done so with me.

I like receiving mail from the Universities I've applied to...helps me remember what supplementary apps. I still have to do and such.

Plus...they send you free pens and all -- those are cool too! Yay for magnets from universities!

Yeah. I haven't received anything but acceptance letters.

I've gotten letters from:

University of Calgary

Mount Royal College

Athabasca University

University of Alberta

University of Lethbridge

University of Brandon

University of British Columbia

University of Victoria

And University of Ottawa

Only three sent me neat stuff. ;_;

Planning on going to any? I'd so go to UofBC -- but my parents are debating on even letting me going to Carleton or Waterloo...so they'd flip if I'd applied to BC.

What'd you apply for...?

Aww...write em a letter and request awesome stuff!

I'm going to Mount Royal to get some general stuff out of the way, and upgrade my math courses. Then I'll probably head to the U of A so I can get on track to a teaching career. I want to teach Highschool English and Social Studies.

Oh...wha. Why? I always saw you as someone to go into a professional career. Like -- engineer, or lawyer or doctor or something!

Well, law is my back up plan. I just don't want to devote that much time and money to something. Teh sum total of my Education would take me seven years if I were to study law. And assuming I attended a decent school, would leave me something like $85,000 in debt. Considering I have preacceptance to Harvard Law for Fall 2007, it could even cost more than that.

I used to receive those letters by the truck load (in the sense that a mail truck is full of mail, and a few of those letters would be for moi), letters and packages of all sizes! Some colleges specializing in things I had no interest in, it was a mail frenzy that would be unparalleled until I am swamped in debt in the future. I was really excited about this one college, Waldorf, and I even went out and bought my wizard robe, staff, and cane. Unfortunately I learned it was highly Christian based and situated in Iowa, which killed my interest in that school, and their craft of magic!

Nowadays one or two persistent colleges drop me a line, but I assume that is mainly because of a revenge-seeking monk (that is a different tale for another day), and I shant play right into his hands. Military keeps after me too, those kooky fellas.

But if you enjoy Law more than you enjoy Teaching -- do Law. Engineering's going to take me about 8 - 12 years if I go all the way to PhD [which I'm hoping to do...] -- and the cost will be just...whoa [~8000 tuition + ~6000 living cost (if I live on campus, considering I get accepted to Waterloo and such) + Misc. Costs = ~15-18K per year * 8 (if I don't do my Master's and go straight to PhD, which might take 4 years) = a lot...]. Plus -- there're always Scholarships + Bursaries to help out...

But I think you should do Law if you enjoy it...plus, if you're good at what you do...then you'll be able to pay off the 85K in no time...hopefully.

I would be leaving with $85,000 in debt after draining my $13,000 RESP, and my Annually renewable $4300 in scholarships.

And it's seven years minimum (Not counting the two I'm doing in college). These days, it's normaly 9+ years that firms are looking for. Add on to that the average wage of even a Copyright specialist for the first few years ($21,000 CND) and you can see how the cost and amount of time builds to an insane degree.

And I actually want to be a teacher. It's not a "Oh, I could do that, I guess." sort of thing. I actually want too. Which is odd, apparently.

It is pretty odd...well...IMO. Other than Law, any other back up or not?

Not really. I have been told several times that I could enter most any area of an acedemic nature, though. I do want to head into politics, but that's something I was planning to do in my mid 40's.

My main things right now are Military reform, unified math and sciences educations, implementing a true two tier health system, and sorting out the Atlantic Provinces. Most likely by expanding the Navy and airforce and locating bases and staff in dwindling communities. Two birds with one stone.

Yay -- airforce!

Well...I might just vote for you then. Just because of the Airforce deal. Alright, you've got my vote, buddy.

Would you run for PM? Premier? MPP? Something else? I'm assuming Prime Minister...
